The tech sheet for Fusor 800 EZ - which I use - says to apply over primed metal. My auto body supply tech says the same thing...
Lay down a coat or Two of Epoxy Primer. Let the Epoxy dry for a couple of hours or so (depending on the Temp. in the shop) and then use a good Urethane Seam Sealer. UPOL's Tiger Seal is really good stuff. Good Luck. VR&C.
It greatly depends on the manufacturer recommendations, there are multiple seam sealers out there that have a OEM and manufacturer approval to go direct to metal. I am with VOODOO though, if you want to be sure, put some epoxy down first.
What is the best way to apply Tiger Seal? Do you spread a bead and then smooth with a plastic bondo spreader? I have even seen some guys apply tape so that you have a nice edge.
One way to get a nice smooth seam is after the sealer is applied, smooth it down with your finger with a good coating of spit. The product will not stick to your finger if you keep it wet. Different products work well with different solvents. Some work well with wax and grease remover, some with window spray cleaner. You want one that does not dilute the sealer, but rather allows your finger to slide over it with out sticking. Try a spot and see the differances.
Wet finger always worked for me, plus it is easier to feather the edge with your finger than a spreader. Taping can leave a sharp edge which sometimes is not a bad thing depending on the area you are sealing.
Yes they do. It tools out nicely with a cut down spreader or acid brush. The other cool thing with it was if you needed to apply it after a 2 k primer was down it will adhere to that too ( kinda of a 1 product does it all deal ). It has the some corrosion inhibitors in it as 8115 Panel Bond Adhesive. 3M reccomomends all of their other seam sealers go over a 2K urethane or Epoxy primers
