30 inch glass packs not loud enough

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by christines49ford, Mar 6, 2012.

  1. So I finally did the exhaust on my 49 ford. The glasspacks aren't loud enough but a friend told me that I need to 'crack them in'. I guess I'm supossed to put water in the pipe when they are hot. I'm not sure about all that? I think I should try smaller glasspacks.any suggestions? Thanks guys

I would think using shorter ones would be the answer or possibly move them closer to the engine.

The correct answer is straight pipes.

I had heard that you should get the glasspacks hot then run cold water up the pipes to the muffler to break the fibreglas up.
    I did it.
I put a garden hose into the tailpipe and turned on the water. The water went in and went in and I was beginning to wonder where it was all going, when it came back out with a tremendous force. The steam sprayed me from waist to ankle.
The burn was very painful and I got out of my clothes and into a bathtub of cold water but nothing helped the pain.
The next day I had blisters full length of my leg, wrapping around my leg and as big as my leg. Three days later the blisters were still there and the pain was not subsiding. I went to a Doctor who gave me one ounce of Silvadine.
I learned later that this was criminal negligence and I should have sued the Doctor. His excuse? He didnt ever deal with burns.
Finally went to the emergency room and they freaked out and shot me up with real drugs and peeled my skin off every day for weeks. They told me I would have been crippled for life if I had not come in. Then I went to physical therapy for weeks until I could walk again. One day the pain was so intense that it took me 35 minutes to get out of bed and walk to the bathroom. The next day it only took 20 minutes.

Louder= shorter glasspacks (18") and mount them closer to the engine. Then let them break in. Or like the real old timers did, put some engine oil in them before installing. Helps burn the 'glass out faster!
Steelpacks are louder, and Brockman Mellowtones even make them with NO packing, so you don't have to wait.

Yes get a short blank universal glass pack and make up the difference with straight pipe.

An old pal told me that in the 60s he would take a glasspack out of the box, fill it with diesel fuel and set it on fire in a field. Then he installed it on the car.:)

I have no mufflers on my 34 P/U. It's not as bad as you might think especially if you have longish tail pipes behind.

  7. in the 60's i used to put some gear oil in glass packs out in a field and then put the oxy acetlene torch in ahd heat it up and when hot just send in oxygen and super burn it out, nice sound:D
use safety and caution if trying this method!!

I have been doing custom exhaust for years there is nothing that sounds as good or raps as good as the old round thrush wood pecker glasspacs. they have become very rare and very pricey I have seen them sell for almost $200 bucks each.HOWEVER chery bomb just came out with a killer muffler [ill call it a clone to the old thrush muffler].Its called Ol Skool Glasspack,I just bought a set they are awesome red powder coat, pintched seam, look and sound like the ol thrush and at $34 each its a no brainer, loud, that just right sound ,and good quailty. Put the mufflers as close to the engine as possible, the smaller the tails {2"}the more rap you will get.

I'd go with a 12" or 18" glass pack, but have your exhaust guy put a oxy/acetylene rosebud tip inside for a few minutes. It'll burn out all the glass packing inside so there's no "break in" period.

Then have the guy install them BACKWARDS! Yes, really.

  10. Mine always start out mellow then progressivley get worse with age. I don't bother doing any of the tricks to them any more I just weld 'em on and drive.

Shorter glasspacks is the best way. One of my best friends always installs a glasspack on one bank and runs a straight pipe on the other. His 50 Chevy Fleetline running a 292 with a split manifold, sounds great !

Calling somebody stupid 'cause they shared how they hurt themselves is stupid. It helps to know what not to do, and can save some others from the same fate. Thanks for posting, chrisntx.

    I like straight pipes.

If the engine is a flathead (I'm assuming here) it doesn't have many cubic inches and therefore a big muffler will KILL any hope of it sounding good. A 12" sounds right to my well trained hot rodding ear.

I had smithys on my T modified, The exhaust system isnt much more than 5 feet long and it was way to quiet. I cut them off and now run straight pipes. WAY BETTER!!!!!!

I did the water thing on a pair of Dynomax turbos - it gave them a throaty sound at idle
Not sure if it would be the same on straight glasspacks tho

    just what i was thinking...

  21. Actually untill I realized that chris got hurt I thought it was pretty funny. Getting hurt isn't but the water going and going and then comming blubbing back out is pretty funny.

Chris sorry you got hurt friend, burns are bad news, hurts way more getting better than it ever did when it was happening. Glad you were not afraid to tell someone.

  22. Can someone explain the "rapping" sound? Also, why spend money on mufflers and then intentionally ruin them?

  23. You know Rapping:

I'm a dog with a cone, tryin' to find my self a home.

Like to run, like to stay, all I wanna do it play . . .
Da dat, da dat, da dut dut dut.

  24. Pork nice rap! I laughed out loud at my computer and now people are looking at me. serves me right for being on at work. Chris did it work? Did you achieve what you wanted?

Sounds painful. I can't imagine that an exhaust pipe and muffler could store enough heat to turn what you're describing as quite a bit of water into hot water and steam.

I'd point out that another danger of doing this would be that, if you put too much water into the system, it's going to get into the engine through any open exhaust valves.

There was a shoebox here on the HAMB that I saw a video of, running a flathead and straight pipes. Sounded a little "ratty" for me, and I like 'em loud. Can't find the video now, but here one I did find...

My ot car has the FloTech redhots on it, about 16" I think. It had a nice sound at idle, but a helluva drone at about 45 mph. It would rattle the windows! It dumped at the rear axle, so I added over the axle pipes and out the rear. Still has the good sounds at idle, just not quite as loud, but mash on it, and it barks pretty good. The length of the pipe after the muffler has a lot to do with the overall sound and loudness no matter which muffler you use. I put a glasspack on a 250 I6 Chevy pickup of Dad's one time, it was actually quieter before I put the tailpipe on! It had a low drone without the tailpipe, with it , it turned into a mid-level rap.

Oh yeah, if you look down into a glasspack, most of them have a louvered center core pipe. Like stated above, if you will turn it so that the exhaust flows over the louvers instead of into them, it will be louder.
