What would be a good easy automatic transmission that can be mated to a Ford 239 Y-Block? This would go into my 54 Cutomline. Thanks
Well, the easiest is the Ford O Matic that came behind Y blocks. But they aren't that common to find and can be expensive to rebuild. There are adapters to put everything from C-4's to AOD's behind the Y Block these days. Or even a Turbo 350

I'm up against the same thing. I have a 292 y block and the Ford-O-Matic in my truck. I love the y block but 2 speeds in the AT sucks. The adaptors I have found to put a later model AT are freakin expensive...700-900 bucks!!! Anybody know of a cheaper route?
Recently sold my Y block because of the cost to put a late model AOD behind it. The cheapest route is not a AOD, t-5 is a lot cheaper but still pricey.
I just recently purchased a adapter kit for my y block to c4, it was around $500, came with bell housing all bolts and flexplate. Check out http://www.ford-y-block.com/ I would have went aod, but in the past I don't like the tv cable and seems like every aod I have had shifts different.
A good Fordomatic will handle all the power a 239 can give. Obviously you can shift your trans manually from low to drive to get all three speeds Fordos come with. A company called Gearstar Transmissions (an aftermarket hot rod type high performance company) sells rebuilt Fordos and/or will rebuild yours. There are C-4 automatic adapter kits that apparently work very well. Can't tell from your profile what city and state you live in to help you with a rebuild. You may already know that mid '56 and up Fordos were oil cooled and not air cooled like your '54 came with. Doesn't help with your auto trans original question but I had a '54 Skyliner (glasstop) with '57 312 and a (Borg-Warner) T-10 four speed that bolts right up to Y-blocks.
