Event Coverage MegaSpeed 2012 Photographs

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Speedy Canuck, Mar 10, 2012.

  1. I'm a terrible photographer, but I thought I'd throw up a couple of the pictures I took with my trust point and shoot at MegaSpeed 2012.

I was hanging out with Jeff Norwell, Fast Elvis, bgbdlinc and a few others and they kept me pretty distracted. Wish I'd taken a few more of the awesome Piston Pushers display.

    Anyways, enjoy!

ps. Sorry for some of the less than detailed pictures. My camera has trouble with the shiny chrome and paint some of these cars have.

The Big Chief roadster is Roadmates member Lou Meehan's car. Lou, if you don't know him, is one of the most interesting characters I've ever met. He's my mentor for all things hot rods and financially too.

Great shots thanks for sharing. Can you give me any details on the AA/A race car? It looks familiar.

    Thanks.

Really want to do that 40 Acres...met a lot of the Piston Pushers....The Hartman Bash is very high on the list......Gonna try for this year...but I have made a big commitment to the bride...
The piston Pushers had a killer set up this year.... the garage was totally off the charts.
    I love that fast Elvis.

  17. There is good reason for both Elvis' (orig and fast) to be popular - it has to do with greatness!!! Everyone loves Elvis!

The Piston Pushers are a great bunch of guys and put a ton of effort into any shows they are involved with. The London ELTA guys seemed to be drawing from their good character. All good things for SW Ontario!!!

On the Hartman Bash: Bring your bride!!! She'll have a great time! I like that our bash is on your list, hope you can make it happen!!!:)

  18. The Piston Pushers display was awesome, simply amazing. Great cars too. Amazing history on display. Someone post some pics.

I was hanging with the stripers all day Saturday, had a blast. This pinstriping stuff is hard work...

  19. Wish I had the change to meet Lou. That car sure is sweet!

That AA/A is Charlie-Horse. I could tell you more about it, but I'd get most of the details wrong. Let me shoot Fast Elvis a PM. He'll get on here and give you all the details on it.

It's the Imperial Speedster. It was a big Imperial that was chopped and sectioned down into a 'what if' Speedster. There was a big write up about it in one of the 2011 (?) Hot Rod magazines.

I'm cursing myself for not grabbing more. I meant to snap some shots when I sat down with them, but I got chatting, and....

The only thing that would be hard work would be focusing on the striping, and not on her bum. ;)

  20. Yeah, the guys doing the striping on models were perfect gentlemen. I'm not sure my hands would have been so steady. :D

  21. The "Charlie Horse" AA/A Alter was built back in 1959 by Chas Haviland and originally ran a Caddy motor untill he realized he could run a 392 hemi 26 percent over drive verses only 16 percent with the Caddy.

In 1968 Charlie drove all the way across country from his farm in Wilsonville Ontario to race at the NHRA Winternationals against the best in the sport in Pomona Cal.

At the 68 Winternationals Charlie beat all comers in his class and set a new NHRA speed record. The car that was in our display is the same car and Cahrlie is still going strong.

Hope this little info helps brother.

  23. Ditto Bob......one main improvement I saw at the show this year was........"you" walking up to me at the Piston Pusher Display......always good seeing you brother.

The proportions on that thing just bugs the shit out of me.

I spent a half hour walking around it at the NSRA nats.

I don't know what it is, too short of wheelbase, too long of overhangs, etc.

It just looks like a clown car.

  25. bgbdlinc and I spent a while looking at it as well. Between us, we decided it was the width that makes everything else look proportionately wrong.

I can really appreciate the workmanship that went into it, but you're right, it's just a bit off.

  26. More than a bit. The wheelbase is too short. A TON of really nice workmanship in that car and they came up... short. I hate to criticise it, it's far nicer than I could build or buy, but the proportions just drive me nuts.

I stopped by on Friday but was pressed for time so didn't stop and chat with anyone. It was a decent show though.

Fast Elvis and Speedy Canuck thanks for the reply. My friend Brooke DeShaw owned a 23T that was built by Keith and Doug Ridler and then passed to Scott Wilson, Miller & Gregory, Duke Brown and then DeShaw. One of my greatest losses were all the pictures taken with a Brownie camera at St. Thomas. I am sure that in the background of one of them was Charlie Horse. DeShaw raced the B/A out of the Roadmates club but I am not sure if he was a member.

Again thanks guys and sorry for hi-jacking the tread. Looks like it was a great show.

  30. Show was better than last year for sure. Finally got to meet the famous Mr Norwell in the flesh! A few old friends and some killer cars. Perfect break from winter and spring is on the way.....
