Hey guys I'm trying to fix my trunk gutters on my 65 fairlane they are rotten , and where the weather strip gose is also rotten .I know they dont repop the peaces for the fairlanes ,but they do for mustang and falcon would these peaces work with a little modifacation
Meaning that if you don't have access to a brake you take a sample to a sheet metal shop and have them bend up some lengths of channel that you can cut and fit and then weld to the car.
The corners take a shrinker/strecher to make the curves. It's not a tough repair but they do take time. You may be better of getting help depending on how correct you want things to look once done. Also, my way of doing this type of job a Tig (heli arc) welder is a must. Wire feed just make a mess. The Wizzard
+1, The shrinker / strecher is the WOW option. Not hard to opperate even for the beginer. The tig is something I also agree with. An inexpensive one can be had for less than a grand. I have done this project on a full size 64 chev and it was a fun project.
Looking at this photo I'd call it a 3 piece repair and a steady hand. Any good tin basher would make that look brand new in bare metal. No filler needed and the rubber should fit as good as new. The Wizzard
I agree, if you have or haven't done much sheetmetal repair, just keep yourself an old 5 gal. bucket of s****s that you cut off your full sheets for small repairs like this. Saves time from having to drop your tools and go looking for your metal, also you can do that repair with a small 110 mig if you have one and can keep your heat where it needs to be. I've seen alot of guys including myself get in the mind set that you have to make these small patches from one piece of metal, when in fact you can use 2 or 3 strips cut to fit and welded in. By the time you over think a project, it could be done. Good luck...
If you have done wheel tubs and floor pans you can do this. The trick if there is one is learning to read what to do first and where to stop. Another way to look at it is, you can't use it the way it is so how can you make it any worse. The good part of your issue is that nothing is damaged, just rusted. You have a perfect pattern and shape. Just make another piece exactly the same only without all the holes. For a first timer I'd say make the replacement piece prior to cutting any of the rotted piece out. Take some time and think ahead of what your doing. It's where everyone of us started. Worst case is you don't like the first one you make and you start over again. If you still don't like the second one then find someone to help you. The Wizzard
Here's a thread on the complete process. We did find the corner pieces used in a Colorado salvage yard. Although they were in much better shape, one did still need repairs similar to yours, although not as extensive. See if this helps..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=309643 .
Thanks pist-b-broke ima give it a shot I called around to the local junk yards and all the farlanes had the same rot
That's some pretty nice work MP&C. Now that you have a step by step pictorial all that's left is to get after it. The Wizzard
Thanks! Wayne, we replaced one of the front corners as well that didn't get added to that thread, so I'll post it here as you said you had issue with that area too. Here's the donor section being trimmed to fit: The pitted section removed: Donor section installed:
Hey, I'd look into hammerforming the corners from, perhaps two pieces, and the long sections can be built with a hillbilly brake. Schek out ''hammerforming'' in the achrives and on online metalworking sites. With a few pieces of wood, a jig saw and some clamps you can build some pretty professional parts without big money tools. As for the ''hillbilly'' sheetmetal brake, metal strap clamped to I beam, or in a pinch , 3/4''-1'' plywood, clamps and a corking tool, and you've got it. Not a tough metalworking project, even for a beginner " Meanwhyle, back onboard The Tainted Pork "
Mp&c hooked me up with a guy that cut the entire trunk gutter out and shipped it to me for cheep and it is in really great shape
I love the hamb there is so much info here and the people are great I'm only 25 and I need all the help i can get lol
