I have a 58 brookwood w a 350/t56 combo. The front half of the driveshaft is bent giving the car a healthy shake over 50mph. Im pretty sure its the stock length n i dont know if it should be. How much longer is the t56 than a powerglide? Also, what other make/model driveshaft would work? Thanks a lot in advance, the car is a blast up to 50 but ibwanna go faster!
Any good drive shaft shop should be able to fix you up with whatever you need. Ask them how to measure and let them fab one.
There aren't any good shops with in about 100 miles of me... Cortes used to be in Brookville but last I heard he shut down. Thats why I was hoping I could just find a stock shaft that would work. I THINK the factory 58 front shaft would work, seeing as thats what on the car now, but it barely has any slip to it and its definetly bent.
It Would take a few days but you should be able to send the old front half off to one of the driveshaft shops with the notation that you need it ____ shorter than it is now and have them put a new tube in it. Someone in the NE probably knows of a good driveshaft shop that you can brown truck your driveshaft to, have a new shaft put on it and balanced and sent back all in a weeks time.
To answer your direct question, a T-56 is 33.1" from the front of the bell to tail shaft. A powerglide can have either a 9" or 12" tailshaft. A powerglide is 16 5/16" from the front of the bell to the case split, so you would add either 9" or 12" to the 16 5/16" to get OAL.
This guy has made a ton for me. Works fast, ships fast. Give him a call and tell him what you need. http://www.4xshaft.com/
Ok, the car has the stock driveshaft but theres maybe 1/2" for it to slip in the tailshaft so i figure if i get this one retubed or find one thats an inch or so shorter i should be good. I tried to measure it today and the best i can tell w it in the car is its 22" from carrier bearing to the output on the ******, and the shaft is 19 1/2 from the carrier to where the yoke starts
