Hi, I have a six cyl. Jeep cj5 with the plastic valve cover and it only tightens down from the right side as it is only a six banger.. How in the hell can you fix this thing and stop the leaking without a great deal of work or expense?/ Does anyone know?? thanks sp1ke
Can't help much on a Jeep but I have had to use 2 sets of cork gaskets to get a small block Chev to stop leaking.
Not familiar with this particular engine, but it might be worth checking that the PCV and crankcase venting are working properly.
Id suggest you make sure the plastic cover isnt warped. Then make sure you dont have any hairline cracks anywhere. If not then Id some gasket schellac with a cork gasket. Ive had good luck doing it like this on Jeeps.
Check with the dealer ... I used to own an AMC Eagle Wagon (258) and if my memory is correct, I think they issued some kind of a fix, maybe even a completely new (revamped/updated) valve cover. You do still have AMC dealers don't you? You might be able to find info regarding a fix on a Jeep site. If they can furnish you with part #'s, you could then hit eBay.
about half the leaky valve covers I've ever seen was caused by over tightening. that said rtv silicone does wonders
There's a number of companies making aluminum valve covers for the Jeep L6 motor. Might consider tossing the plastic and buying one of those: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...jeep+L6+valve+cover&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Replace it with an aluminum one its almost impossible to get that plastic cover to quit leaking. On a related note do you have any good recipies for cooking fish which is just about as related to this site as questions about a jeep go ask the question on pirate 4x4. Later Mike
One Pine 1" x 12" plank, one large Carp, cleaned and spread out flat on the plank. Tack Carp tightly to plank and season well with your favorites. Cook over open fire 1/2 --3/4 hr. Remove from plank, discard Carp, cut plank into squares, Serves 4-6 people.
Ps; That original had "cleats" that clmped it down, on in that "left" side. it didn't wrk well.... See the above post.... 4TTRUK
I wonder if something like The Right Stuff would work on it? The stuff is the best sealant I have ever seen. Don
