I would like to make my own steering column, but I would like to have a simple clean signal that I can mount in the column.

What older vehicles would have something simple like this? Possible with a high/low beam switch in it as well?

    Thanks

  2. I think any GM column would be a safe bet.

How about from a motorcycle for a vintage look? They clamp over the bars and are self cancelling. A bracket to hold it would be easy. Gary

  4. An MC switch would work,,,but the cancelling feature works with a "lean" sensor.

No, it works using a combination of distance sensor and time readings.

The problem with those is that they don't work through the brake/tail lights like auto turn signals. That would require another set of lamps for turn signals. May not be a problem on some cars, but on many, the extra lights may look out of character.

Need more details....how big is the column? what steering wheel are you using? what do you mean by "simple", especially with a built in dimmer? are you ok with using foreign crap?

This is what came to my mind too, NAPA sells them everyday for grain trucks and such that didn't come with turn signals from the factory...or IH put these in their trucks at the factory, not sure which...cancelling features aren't available on the though...

1949-52 Plymouth. Replaces the factory collar under the steering wheel. Nice and clean. Was a dealer installed option.

Take a look at the 55-56 Ford pickup column.
Very easy to adapt to early Fords and it is self cancelling.
They are wired through the stop lights also.
I have put them on several A's and 32's.

I currently have a 56 f100 column, thinking about using the shaft and wheel and making my own housing. It has one of the clamp ons on it now and it looks like crap I think, sorry if I step on anyones toes........

Here is a modified VW unit that I installed in my Factory Five Cobra. Direction switch and a push button on the end of the stalk taht can be used for a horn (or operate a relay for hi/low beams I would guess).

I think it is out of a 62-65 Vw Bug. The company I bought mine from reworks them so they self cancel on the stock column, and installs a different handle, etc. Here is a link to a stock VW switch for $33.00.

  23. If you had seperate turn signal lights you could use a Single Pole Douple Throw Center Off Switch but that won't have any cancelling. That's about as simple as you can get.

I don't know the look that you are going for but for the old time look check out early to mid 50s cars and trucks.

Most will have a 1 1/2" tube which can be easily replaced with exhaust tubing and the original TS switch is easily added at the top.

Both of these are 56 Ford truck. Very clean and self canceling TSs.... a big plus for an old man like me.:D

The steering wheel that you want to use will play a part in the selection process for a TS sw that you harvest and reuse.

Personally I hate the chrome plated clamp on style with the built in 4W flashers which didn't appear until the mid 60s. I do love the older units with the art deco styles.

I'm just too lazy to change the perfectly good working one that came in the roadster.:D It is ugly but I just live with it. The 57 Ford car switch and housing is very similar to the truck unit.

Could you post a link to the maker or supplyer of your turn signal switch.

  26. I used a column out of an early 70's Chevy pickup in my 29. It is really simple in its lines, and has it's own turn signal/horn. Not to mention the fact that you can get replacement parts with no problem. Steering wheels are a dime a dozen too.

Look for an early Mustang column. It has areal neat appearance with a turn signal and no key or shift lever.

  29. the turn sig assembly from a corvair is self contained in a metal collar that has a set screw to hold it on the column. I put one on my golf cart in about 5 min. looks good

Were turn signals an option in the 56ish trucks??? My column doesnt have one....

I plan on using the original 56 steering wheel, I want to shorten the circumference to end up with a 15.5" wheel. I have a feeling that the splines are not going to match up to any shaft I use or will they???
