i have a 56 chev 210 with 327 4 speed and long tube headers i want to upgrade the steering col and have a nice aftermarket generic GM col for it problem is car still has the stock steering box and steering col how do i adapt the new gm style col to the stock manual steering box or what other ideas for easy interchange do you guys have for me i cant seam to figure out how to disconnect the stock col from the steering box
The stock steering column in these old cars is integral with the box.It comes out in one piece. You can convert to a later model box like a 605 that will connect to your late model column. Cl***ic Chevy (I think its Ecklers now) used to sell a conversion kit that let you put your column, the 605 box and what ever else you needed to put a late column in your car.
You can keep the stock box by cutting the shaft, making a "D" or "Double D" on the stub, and using a rag joint to go with a later column. Doing it this way just is'nt the popular way that it used to be. Now, everyone wants to update the box also to a 605 or the newer 500. Butch/56sedandelivery.
its looking like the col i bought for this car will go in my 32 roadster or maybe my 62 nova conv and ill put sum time into getting ride of the col shift protrusion on the stock col the advantage of having more than one project cooking at the same time a purchasing mistake can be redirected i still need to pick new seats
I ran a mid 60s tilt in my 55 chevy. That way I still had the key in it's proper place. I just cut the shaft and welded it.
for the nova a steering box change is on the cards anyway just need to pick a new box that works with the stock front suspn that is already rebuilt the new col is floor change key less
