I'm a little bummed that I'm not gonna make it to Columbus cause the 32 just isn't ready for a road trip. SO......how about Bonneville. I'm definately going now.

Who's going?? I remember a few guys offering to buy the first beer :D

Any rooms availble? I would rather stay at the bend in the road but I'm not sure who's going with me yet. They might be a ***** and not like camping.

How's the weather looking? Salt conditions?

Wherever you stay, plan on the bend in the road Saturday night.

For those who've never been there, camping at the bend is not what you're used to. There are no toilets unless they're in your camper. There is no water. There is no shade. Showers and necessities are nearby at the truckstop, but this isn't any forest service or KOA campground. In short, it's great :)

  4. I'll be there, I don't have a room yet. There are no rooms if you call.
When I was by in June (around the 11th or 12th) the Salt was under water. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and who knows what the weather is going to be like in a month or so.

hotels, maybe I can get on a list somewhere as I hate
    camping.

Most of the rooms in Bendover are held by the same people year to year. The way you get one is usually when someone cancels so you have to keep calling or hope someone you know lets you use theirs. There are more people going to speedweek now than there have ever been and there has never been enough rooms to handle the influx for the event. So you really have 3 choices.

1: Get lucky and spend a fortune with a room in the Peppermill or one of the casinos in bendover. (I got lucky last year) I was at the desk in the Peppermill getting change when someone canceled their room.
2: Stay at the bend in the road in your camper or tent. Listen to the soothing sounds of Honda generators all night keepin the rich *******'s liquer cabinets and air conditioners running.
3: And I hate to spread this around... Get a room in the airport area of Salt Lake and spend a couple hours commuting to the Salt every day. Actually cheaper than getting a room in Bendover but it's a lot of miles back and forth across that desert every day. Might be an option if you use a rental car.

  8. We've been calling everyone in Wendover about once a month since february. They always say you gotta book a room way in advance. But we always find a room after we get there. I think there are folks that have a room reserved since the 50s, and haven't been there in years.

    I'll be there.

Hotel is booked, airfare is booked, and I even bought a car out there to drive around in!

Saturday will be fun. I've got 5 VW half cases for the fire.

Last year myself and several others got a canceled room and split the cost. No big deal sleeping on the floor, it beats waking up to the hot sun in the morning, which you will if you camp out at the bend. Saturday night at the bend is worth checking out and then head into town where lots of people park their rides at the casino's. Definitely a good time and worth checking out atleast once in your life time. Not sure if I'm going to be able to make it this year, but there will be lots of guys from SLC out there. Right now weather is good, (for today anyway, one day it's rain then sunny), and last I checked the salt is dry. Getting a place in SLC is a real possiblity and the drive really isn't that far. Most can make it in about 1 1/2 hr....hope that helps. pm or email me if anyone has any more ?

I might have a extra space at the KOA it looks like one of my freinds is flaking. Also I had a friend driving back from Wyoming said the salt looks very wet (like under water) but I don't know what it normaly looks like at this time of the year. Scott

How cool does it get at night at the bend in the road? I remember sleeping in the truck when we went in 96.

Is it easier to get a room on Friday night or Sunday night?

Anybody in the Salt Lake area or anybody that knows the Salt Lake area can you PM me I have a crazy idea I could use some help with. Don't worry I'm not askin to stay at your house

    ScaredLarry may be going.

Brush ....howd you know I say Bonneville wrong??? :D There's a local town called Bonneville and it's pronounced that way. It also confuses people when I say "I want to go to Bonneville". They think big deal!

Sunday night is much easier to find a room. When we drove there in 01', that was the night that we rolled into town. I had rooms reserved in Elco, but found one at Wendover.

I checked the landracing site and they said it's drying up. The water is just about gone.

  21. Its set for us. The Pk'n'Bner and Mrs Bner are camping at the bend in the road Saturday night and hooking up with the rest of our crew Sunday somewhere in a room.

That means that Sunday morning Coffee and grub is on us. So everyone should give me some damned idea how many eggs I need.:D:D:D.

The only down side is that we'll probably be in Mrs Bner's new truck as opposed to my old beater. Ah hell you can't have everything I guess.

    OH yea,
Just got this on salt conditions for those that are interested. This was forwarded to me BTW I'm not really in the inner circle.;)

Received this favorable salt report from Ray Kelsey with the Salt Lake BLM
today. You might also mention that we have a tentative date to do our
"Pre-Trip" to lay out our courses for this years events. It looks like the
week of July 18th. (Tentative only) Thanks Mike Waters

"I was out on the salt just yesterday. It looks to me like
the salt is in better shape this year than last. Coverage around the end of
the access road looks better this year. There was no standing water
anywhere except a few small holes but the salt was still very "slushy"
because of remaining moisture. But I think that will dry up pretty well in
the next month. Looking forward to this year's events. Good luck."

  23. We'll be there. Scrambled is easy. If there's a ton of eaters they'll all be scrambled. And I usually keep Orange juice in the cooler.

    Clark,
What are you gonna be out there in? @ 2003 Bonneville, we took my roadster & a chase vehicle, worked out real good especially when we lost a belt somewhere after the town of Alamo, Chased down our cruisin contingent & made a rope fan belt while they continued on. Stopped in Ely bought belts (1 for a spare) coolant. About 1hr out of Ely here was the trailer off the shoulder of the road. Crusin buddies, race car trailer popped a tire. They cruised all the way to Wendover bought a used 16" tire, we asked if they needed our help, they told us to go on,which we reluctantly did. They fixed that tire & 5 mins/miles after they got the used tire on the other one blew, so they were dead in the water again. same deal in to again. Mind you it took them 25 hrs to get there which normally is a 10-12hr trip from Pasadena.
I've always been told that in order to get a room, you gotta order a year in advance,Bullpuckie! when we cruised in town, tech was just wrapping up & we pulled up to the Comfort Inn or something like that, Gal-Pal Pat struts in there after I had just been told that there were no rooms available
walks out with some keys & got the room for like $65.00 a night. I must have not been the right gender. Now they were full!
Had a *****en time, had to leave monday though to get back to work.
It is an adventure in a Hot Rod. Might I make a suggestion:confused: Why don't ya fly
into Ontario like a day earlier, I'll see if I can get Mike to either drive to or "Hertz" you the SO-WHAT rpu....to go to Bonneville in. Again, no rooms though. Might be cool cruisin your ol truck out to the salt!
PM me & I'll ring Mikey up. BTW Pork & ******, I'll take mine over easy, ok;)

Kevin...I'll be driving the 32. The trip there is half the fun for me. I think Fatabone is following me in his coupe. Plus I'm gonna see if I can talk some more into going. Any Takers???? We can pick you up along the way.

I was gonna make the trip with the RPU before I sold it but I couldn't get anybody to go with me. I was short on money and needed a p***enger to help with the cost.

We did the ultimate trip for east coasters in 96. MotorMikey and I went to Bville for the races on Saturday. We stayed a little later than we planned. Left the salt and made it to Andy's picnic on Sunday morning. After Andy's picnic we headed south and hung out in LA for the week. Mikey's cousin was one of the Pussey Cat Dolls and got us into some shows. Then we headed back up to Pleasanton for the Goodguys show. When I got home I had enough time to wash my clothes and head off to a local rod run that has camping for the weekend.

The California shows were cool but the salt spoiled us. We were amazed at how the racers made us feel like somebody. We were just two kids in a hot rod driving across the country. They were the ones racing and going over 200mph. We talked to the Peirson brothers and didn't even know who they were till after talkin to them for an hour. Really cool guys!

On that trip we only had three things break, two axle bearings and the waterpump. The axle bearings took some work to get fixed plus some towing. The waterpump was easy. We were in Cali. The best place to change a waterpump in Cali? A carwash :D

I don't think I could drive the RPU again. If I did it would have to come home with me. The Coupe is cool but that RPU was a fun car!

I did the Salt Lake City commute thing in 2003, my wifes cousin lives there. The drive wasn't real bad, but you miss the best part of the day (COOLEST) on the salt.
They say it's cool at sun rise, and gets warmer and warmer as the day goes on.
I would ***ume it gets "less hot" enough to sleep at the bend of the road later at night, but a room in Wendover would be the way to go.:)

  28. B-ville is desert, hot in the day time and outright fridged at night.

Clark and whoever find us for breakfast and when the foods gone we'll invite ourselves to someone elses food. My specialty (find my intro :D).

We're leaving KC on thursday and we'll be in a truck either the Pusher or the wife's new luxery beasty. Anyone who wants can PM me for my cell. We're not opposed to pickin' up straglers.

Haven't decided on a route yet, options from KC include boogeyin' across kansas and then through the rockies or up to Lincoln and across I-80. So anyone that wants a chase truck and is on my schedual drop me a note we'll hook up somewhere.

Any one needing some help or a place to chill on the way through SLC is welcome to swing by my place.
Only a gravel driveway, but I have tools and welders if needed. Also have my trailer and truck if needed (nobody here ever breaks though).
PM me for my cell #
