So I want to do the lid on my car in a pearl like paint. Right now I am looking for suggestions on which route to take as far as types of paint, and color options. I've noticed a few new cars have a pearl/ivory paint as an option such as Cadillac and I believe Toyota. Its always cheaper to get a jobber paint right? any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I'm no pro painter, but I'm getting real good at sanding runs
I don't know about cheaper but it would make it a lot simpler for someone to match the paint later if you used a factory pack color. Some late model Fords have a similar color. In 1982 When my wife and I picked the color for the 48 we drove by car lots during the day and then after dark to find a color that looked great both in the daylight and under the lights. They rolled a 2012 Chevy Volt into the airport terminal where I work today for show and tell that has a Crimson (serious candy apple) red on it that would have taken a world cl*** custom painter to lay on 30 years ago and now it's a regular base coat clear coat paint job.
Had a friend tell me he just priced a gallon of a new Cadillac Blue/Pearl. Over $800 a gallon. Plus that doesn't include clear etc.
Spies Hecker has converted the G.M. Diamond White Pearl to a Two Stage Formula. That would be the least expensive way to shoot a White Pearl. They may have also converted the other White Pearls from other manufacturers. The Lexus White Pearl is also a really nice White Pearl. Keystone / LK&Q Corp. used to handle Spies Paint. Try out your local Keystone branch. Here is a web link : http://www.lkqcorp.com/ Good Luck, VR&C.
HOK Snowhite (PBC44)......it's a pearl white that's a little "dirty"...like Ivory.... and it rules.....
I think I could get away with a quart of paint to do the whole lid. Thats a quart of each layer. I checked on the Caddy color a few years back and at the time it was $300 a quart, I was blown away.
I just checked TCP Global site for this. Price is pretty good at $87 a quart. http://www.tcpglobal.com/hokpaint/hok-shimrin-designer-pearls.aspx I'm not to keen on the color sample online, I wish I could see it in person.
You could always order a little from coastairbrush.com to paint a small part with...they package it in small quanities... http://coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=49 My T coupe is going to be Snowhite.....
I priced out paint for a 66 GTO years back, in a factory Caddy Candy red color. I was shocked at the price, so I checked it out in HOK REAL Candy Apple Red, and it was hundreds cheaper than Dupont Chromabase. And it looks a hell of a lot better. Quality is top notch, so you don't have to worry about touching it up later, at least color-wise...it is still difficult to get perfect with any 3 stage.
My wife found the perfect red for the roof of her '51. It was a Jag color and crazy expensive. After a little digging she discovered that it cross-referenced to a Toyota color that was a LOT cheaper.
My wife's 2011 HHR has that same color, it's called "crystal red metallic tintcoat" My guess is that it's a 3 stage color, but it is definately a beautiful candy like red.
i have been looking at pearl oranges to put on my 56 F100, TCP Global seems to have the best price and either House of Kolor or PPG have a good selection of pearl in a reasonable price, if you are going to paint yourself practice and walk the panels, it will be my first time spraying pearl myself and I have been researching technique and errors to avoid
Know what's *****in' for orange??? A Vitamin C metallic with gold pearl in the clear......Popciclicious......
I'm not keen on H.O.K. It is really finicky stuff. Spies Hecker is good stuff. If you can get the Three Stage converted to a Two Stage, you'll save $$$$$$. VR&C.
HOK Is AWESOME! I sprayed the top of a chevy truck with it. Looked so good and no harder to spray than anything else.
