I taped and watched Hot Rod TV on January 18th...the one about So-Cal, and Shine is standing there holding a couple of black domes that a customer brought in for him to make air cleaners out of for his '29 roadster. Shine says they were originally air cleaners off a 1927 Lincoln... Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and I'm at an estate sale going thru a box of junk, and looky what I find...
Great find Larry! They came a few cars in the 20's- does yours have the internal fan blade? I was dumb enough to p*** one up for $60 at Hershey a few years back...
That car was in Rod & Custom or Street Rodder a few months ago. The blades act as a kind of turbocharger and help with air induction. Pretty cool stuff, Nice find.
NO! They Don't. The internal fans are to catch incoming debris (dirt) and fling it to the out side of the shell which lets it fall out the bottom on the sides instead of down the center and into the carb. Basically a mechanical air-filter. On some airplanes I've flown this would be called an "IPS Duct" Inlet Particle Separator Duct.
3wLarry - Interesting find ... I've never seen an air cleaner like that ... but those headlight buckets in the background of your last pic appear to be off of a 1927 Chrysler
LOL WHAT?? In no such way do they act like a turbocharger, go read up on what a turbo does. That's a sweet find, it would be neat to be going through a box of stuff and stumble upon them.
hmmm... so technically they have an air cleaner bearing??.... wonder if its similar to a muffler bearing? nice find!
Remember to use high speed grease on the impellor bearing and let the engine idle for a minute before shutting it of so you don't screw up the seals in the A/F housing...............And if you believe that, I have an OX-5 powered staggerwing beech for sale. Looks like a half round cheese slicer.
