I'm surprised there aren't more responses to this thread! I know lots of kids ended up with a promo model or two hundred back in the day. They're something I've always loved to collect, and am definitely interested in. Anyone else?

Some early ones may have been resin as well. The switch to the styrene was approximately 1961-1962 or so. Even in a warped state, some promos fetch a good price. There were some with friction motors in them.

Thanks for bringing this back up. Like yourself, I'm surprised more folks haven't chimed in. As far as myself, I kinda forgot about the thread. Hope to see more pics.

...Sounds about right for the switch to styrene. I have a couple of '61 Ford Starliners that are obviously styrene and have held up well, but my '60 Sunliner must not be 'cause it has warped a little over the yrs.

Where have we seen this before? Just add water and you get a recent HAMB build, eh? Gary

Never saw the 32 Ford, but until 1996 Ford Motor Co. sent owners a small Ford Times magazine that in some issues included a card to send in and get a promo model. Those are the Ford promos that have features of the car printed on the bottom.

Nowadays promos are mostly Corvettes, and a lot of people bought them by the case, expecting to make a profit later. Instead, they flooded the market and now 80s and 90s Corvette models are cheap on eBay.

Hope you're right. It's tough to find other promo collectors, even on the web. Know of any groups? Kids today seem to prefer kits.

I collect mostly kits because they usually cost much less than promos, but I have about 50-60 in my collection.... mostly later Corvettes, but also some Vipers, Camaros and Firebirds. My early promos include '63-'66 Impalas, original '64 Galaxie and '66 Fairlane GT (I say original because back in the late 80s/early 90s, they issued new versions of them), a rough '64 Grand Prix, '70 and '71 GTOs and a '70 Firebird, along with some miscellaneous stuff like El Caminos, some others. There have been some other newer issues of early-style promos as well, in the form of '53 and '63 Corvettes and the Mako Shark I concept car, as well as some that were re-issued back in the 80's by JoHan models. Those included the Chrysler Turbine car, '70 Olds 442, '76 Olds Cutl***, '69 AMX, '55 and '56 Pontiacs, '59 Plymouth and '59 and '61 Dodges.

There are collectors of promos out there.... just not a lot of them here!

I got a 55 or 56 Ford hardtop one year for Christmas when I was a kid. It was red and white and had a friction motor. The box it came in was printed up to look like a 1 car garage. None of this matters now. cuz I destroyed it.

I remember buying two corvette "built models" on ebay, one solid yellow the other solid red. Both for under 50 bucks shipping included. Turned out they were 72 and 73 corvette promo's in awsome shape. They are aprox 225-250 each in value. Scoured the antique shops for years looking for those dam things.

My uncle bought a new car every couple of years and when they visited us one year, he drove out to CA from IL in his new 53 Chevy. As a gift to 14 year old me, he gave me a dealer promo that I ended up customizing. Not sure if I still have it but will take a look. I only remember that it had lots of "wood filler" in it after I chopped the top.

......Got a stack of those Ford Times from the late 50's and 60's. My Dad bought a new Ford every few yrs. ('53 Victoria, '56 Club Sedan, '59 Custom300, '60 Fairlane 500, '63 Wagon, '64 Galaxie, '66 Galaxie, '69 Torino, '75 F-100). Wish I had some of them now, but did get a few promos out of the deals.:) Got afew of those Buyer's Digests of New Cars from Ford as well. At least the 1960 and 1967 editions that I can locate at the moment.

  28. Mostly promos. More of them are boxed up than on display. I dunno--1,000? There's way too many of them!
