I'm not usually one to vent but... I went by the local metal s****yard (Midwest Iron and Steel) to look for some goodies over lunch. I went into the office like normal to borrow a helmet and was informed that as of the first of the year the public could no longer go in. It was an insurance thing. I have bought a LOT of cutoff s**** there for my projects as well as other goodies such as a pair of 6/71 blowers, an A833 o/d transmission, etc...

I am seriously bummed out!!!! Gotta find another source now.

It's been that way around here (lower NYS) for decades now. Insurance companies are in charge.

I used to go to the local s**** metal yard avery day on my lunch hour.I got lots of goodies, thatn I sold at swap meets or on E-bay.I got many GMC blowers,He even called me when He got blowers in. The local manufacturing plants used to s**** some really nice metal, especially at inventory time. The manager retired, and the new management put a stop to any shopping in the yard.I still have a "connection" but don't have free acess to the yard.

  5. Play the game, Kerry. Tell them you'll work there part-time in exchange for parts. THEN, you're not the 'public', but an employee. Insurance exclusion byp***ed. ;)

It happened a few years ago here in Indy. All the independent s**** yards have been bought up by a large company named "Omnisource". Since then, its "buy only"; nobody is allowed on the premises except to unload what they're selling. This has eliminated what used to be a great source of cheap metal.

  7. I had a junkyard thread the same as this last year. Blame the lawyers and insurance guys, or the threat of a lawsuit regardless. Sorry to BobK and the 2 lawyers I trust in the world ;)

It may or may not be the insurance company's fault. That's sometimes an easy excuse to change the rules.Maybe theft had become a problem. In my business,I can order all kinds of professionally done signs that basically say keep out, etc., and blame the company insurance. They are for my convenience, not because there's any truth to the sign.
Situation still ****s,no matter what the reason is.

Next time a friend/neighbor/family member exclaims "i got a settlement" you can thank them for the insurance issues.

The yard by me stopped letting people in after some fool climbed on the roof of one car and took a header when he tried to jump to the next car because he didn't want to step in the mud and then tried to sue them for damages.

  11. Oh yes, you are right, the yard I mentioned is using "the insurance" as an excuse!

How come the Pick A Part and Pick And Pull wrecking yards just make you sign a waiver and you go in and do it yourself. To many Darn greedy lawyers , dirtbags!

Good old C&S s**** in Deer Park, NY would let people in to buy. They even had shopping carts and a scale handy. Fill up the cart, hit the scale, pay the man and you were good to go. I built a couple of stock cars out of yards like that.

Ain't the lawyers that start lawsuits. It's dumb***es who believe they're EN***LED. The war we lost wasn't the one on drugs or terror, it was the one on common sense and nobility.

I love the idea above about 'playing the game'- have them hire you, payment in parts. No longer a member of the "general public". Alternately, ask them if signing a damage/personal liability waiver is an option?

Idiots (the ones starting lawsuites for their own stupidity), then lawyers, judges, then finally insurance companies....are ruining this country!

Bottom line-- pickers were more trouble than they were worth. It's business.
Sometimes we take things for granted until they're taken away.

Naw, there's lots of s**** staying right here. What it is, is less h***le, fewer lawsuits, less theft and a whole lot less *****ing to "buy only" and not have to deal with you,the public. As Pogo said, "we have met the enemy and he is us".

Don't forget the 'idiot' citizens that make up public jury's and feel that everyone is en***led to huge settlements just because they're suing a large co. or municipality. Ever serve on a jury? It's amazing how stupid some people are.

Last year, my kid's elementary school was sued because a kid fell off one of the playground swings and injured his wrist. The huge reward wasn't because of faulty equipment or 'lack of supervision' (what I expected). It was because the staff didn't properly train the child to use the equipment (new generation of parents that expect the school to raise their children)!
End result is the school district removed all of the swings, monkey bars, climbing structures that have been there 50+ years (without issue). The kids are now left with a gr*** field, basketball court and a huge sandbox where the playground once stood.

The key here is to bring s**** metal in, along with a case of beer, on a Friday.

Drop your s**** metal off, and throw the stuff you want in the trailer/truck. If the crane operator h***les you, give him the beer. Re-weigh andhead out.

    Otherwise, weekend job.
