It probably could have worked if each cut was cut all the way thru and a tapered sliver of metal welded in each half. That would be 4 full welds on each half and then 2 welds across the hood for the extension piece.

Then about 100 hours of metal finishing and done.

This is not meant as a dig at the OP because I don't mind trying things myself even if I end up spending forever fixing the mess I created.
    Great way to learn.

I haven't had time to play with this hood for the past week or so. I should get to it this weekend & post a photo. I know y'all need a good laugh.

i wouldnt laugh , some times you just gotta see for yourself , imagine if all the great inventors of the world listened to people who told them , oh you cant do that , or that will never work , where would we be today : ) im not saying stretching a hood will work , but hey at least you tried and got to see what the metal would do when welded this way

  6. I think if you learned something that is all that matters. I'm not gonna laugh. I can already tell from what you have posted that I have done worse on some older projects of mine.

Bob when i was an apprentice i completely ruined a tractor mudguard (fender). I bashed and heat shrunk on that sumbitch till it was warped and couldn't be recognised!! :D:D
My boss just let me go...eventually after puttin up with the waste of Oxy/Acet and constant LOUD BASHHHHING for half a day...he just came over and explained to me what i was doin and what was goin on with the metal.
Ended up cuttin off the whole side of the guard and replacing it with new flat steel . Looked good in the end ...and I learned in the process.
Your hood is the same kinda exerecise. You learn ..and who knows how many other folks around the globe reading this may pick something up also.
I for one am glad you started this thread.
    Paul.

Interesting, I've just done the same thing with a 30-31 hood. I stretched mine 4", but my method was a little different.
I basically removed the hinge in the middle, added a filler piece (wedge shape) to the center and the added 4" to the front, making sure everything lines up.
Here is some pics, tacked together.

To be fair the this project procedure is a little different in the case you were let off the leash to do what you thought would work with no prior advice.in this case prior advise was given by professionals and ignored.
If your boss had told you what you wanted to do wouldn't work and you went ahead anyway, you would stand a good chance of being let go.
There are guys on here wanting to lengthen their own hood, hoping what bob does will work so the can do the same and not have go to a professional shop.

I agree Jon...he was advised of better way to tackle the job(including my own method-which is the opposite of Chris' method above) , by throwing our ideas out there HOPEFULLY others reading this thread who are wishing to lengthen their hoods will have a better understanding that Bob's way wasn't the best and understand exactly why its not..and will take heed.
After all...we're only tryin to save folk some time and money :):)

I was just driving down the road yesterday thinking about this thread and wondering what the outcome was. I promise not to laugh too. I probably did much worse at different, not so distant times back.

  15. Chris, did you peak the wedge that runs down the middle or leave it flat?

Yes, I did. The wedge I cut, is flat at the cowl and then has a crown where it meets the deuce grille shell. A little bit of english wheeling was all it took to get that shape.
Maybe I'll post more pics when I'm done.

Fleet-Master, I'm not ignoring you. I have been going over the whole car with metal glaze, trying to get it as flat as possible. I hope to shoot a prime coat in a few days. This should give me a good visual of the final result. After it is primed I will post a photo.
    Thanks for your interest,
    Bob

I think you should post it in bare metal. That's what this post is supposed to be about!

    Fleet-Master,
The Metal Glaze is great stuff, much like bondo but very thin, like honey. I like to go over all surfaces that have been repaired, just a thin coat. I then sand until you can see through it. It fills any minor scratches etc. Sands easy. It's a little expensive, about $40.00 a quart.

i wonder if u put the flattie in useing the Vern Tardell book, because i bought the book, and its wrong on the measurements on were to place the motor mounts, if u follow it u will never get your hood on, and it will be 2 1/2" short and your rad. will be out 2 1/2" past were it should be.

I had to draw this out to get a better grasp of the original idea
    [IMG]

Now I see why things didn't line up. The cuves in the hood were smushed to line up, creating the bubble of extra material in the bend. A good learning experience for the OP and all of us "aspiring metal surgeons".

WBRW32, why do u need a streched hood mine fits like original, do you know why, because the motor mounts are at the right spot. 5 1/2" back from the center bolt hole of the radiator. what's it going to look like? glad its not mine.
