Has anyone done a 300 six into a 57-59 Ford swap? I know they came with 223's so it should fit right?
The 300 would be a sweet swap... the engine bay on the 57-59 should have more thanenough room.... Your redhead avatar is hot, hot... Tom
Thanks. The swap would be different, just wondering if anyone has done it and has any advice to give. Mounts etc.
hubcap, there is a post on Fordsix.com in the 240/300 section about this,IIRC someone used the Transdapt motor mount crossmember for the 390/428 engines.
Well i havent personally done this, but i bought a 58 ranchero that had a 300 six and c4 installed into it. Pretty peppy little motor actually. I could spin the tires pretty easy. Though the motors a bit longer and i installed an electric fan in front of the radiator.
hubcap, might also try looking for a 65 galaxie with a 240 in it and maybe use those mounts. For ehaust use the late model EFI exhaust manifolds they are cheap and easy to find at the junk yards.
Maybe my memory is fading but I though 6 cylinder frame to Engine mounts/brackets were very similar to 289/302 (small block) brackets, If you go to pick in pull there may still be a few 67-72 Ford trucks with 302's in them, (or even 6 cylinder) The OEM frame to engine support bracket *might be easily? modified to work with your early frame. ~An old trick was to take the 302 frame brackets and switch them side for side, This puts the left bracket on the right and vis versa but more importantly, you reverse the brackets so that they place the engine more forward rather then "point backward" toward the firewall. I don't recall exactly how much this moves the 302/289/6 cylinder forward but it sure helps when it comes to clearing the firewall especially with vehicles where you need the engine to sit more forward, - and pulling this old switheroo performs that. This is not to say that the 67-72 Truck (small block or 6 cylinder) frame brackets are a direct bolt in because they are not but they do give you a (natural) support for your 6/302 and in the reversed position and they move the engine forward of your firewall. (*a little fab and ingenuity and imagination may be required) -good luck with your project, moe .
I do have a set of those manifolds, bought them without even having an engine "just in case". I need to go to Pull-A-Part and look at mounts. I'm more worried about the front of the valve cover running into my hood at this point. I figure (hope!) that if people can shoehorn 460s in there the big six will fit. I would love to talk to someone who has actually done this swap. No subs***ute for first hand experience. Thanks for all the replies and ideas.
Great choice for a towing vehicle situation...BUT have you had one of the 300 sixes? They really love..... the fuel, with the proposed increases in gas prices you might regret that engine choice a lot.....
My pics were on my computer that crashed. I posted them other places and can find them again. But its a much taller motor, i had to run a very thin air cleaner, it had a clutch fan on it that was 1/4 inch from the motor, so i yanked that and went electric. Sorry, i dont recall the motor mounts. I bought it with the motor and trans already installed and just did the plumbing, wiring and linkage.
