I have been buying parts in Canada and the U.S. for years... lucky I am close to the border..

So today I was looking for a bearing and race.. called up the local supplier.. and was told it was $33.00 plus tax (12%) .... seemed a little high to me.. its just a front wheel bearing set.... so I went online.... and found a bevy of places across the line with the same set... and the price..............$5.00....

hmmmmm I don't mind paying 25% more for what ever reason... the dollar is the same now.. our wages might be a little higher,... but the parts all come from the same place.. over seas.... any thoughts to why this is such a big difference... were talking 6 times the cost here....

grabbing my p***port... and getting down south.... milk and cheese are low too....lol.....

Depends on WHO manufactured it...Chinese **** is just that...and cheap. Check the place of manufacture before you head down...

Doesn't Canada have import fees...could be that's the reason it's higher there.

worse yet....you receive the part from the U.S. vender and stamped on the box is "Made in Canada"!
    Gotta love that!

well while I was out getting my overpriced bearing .. I popped into the fastener supply house here in my town... 2 x 5/8 x 6" bolts grade 8..... $15.00 with tax....

looked up fasteners inc just across the border.... same bolts.... and they are made in Canada.... $4.00...... are we that greedy here...

I know out tax is higher... not 4-5 times higher... i would not even mind paying double...

    I know what you mean.
I don't mind spending a little more to support a local shop, but when it is 4 or 5 times the US price, the least they could do is include a jar of vaseline!

My guess is we got so used to everything being more expensive when our dollar was so low that most people just expect it to still be that way so retailers don't drop their prices.

Some of your examples are pretty extreme but unless you are close enough to the boarder to drive down and pick stuff up it's usually not that cheap. By the time you pay shipping/duty/brokerage etc it ends up being about the same or even more for most things so there is no incentive for retailers to lower prices.

Was in a home center in North Dakota, talked to a canadian who was buying a bunch of gallons of house paint, $25 a gal. here over a $100 in Canada. It isn't just car parts.

Don't you have the VAT tax in Canada? Iron ore taxed after melted and alloyed to steel ingot. Steel ingot taxed after being made into blanks or rolled into sheets or extruded as tubing or rod or flat bar. Base steel form products taxed when made into spring perches, springs, bolts. Finished products taxed when sold wholesale to distributors. AND again when sold to retail customers!

What about fuel??? Everybody on this board *****es about high fuel prices. Today the average is $1.13 a liter which with the dollar at par works out to $4.30 a gallon. Only Hawaii has higher gas prices in the US.

Blaming the high price on taxes is pure BS,,I live near the border,,even got a Minnesota mailing address. Here's a good example Felpro gasket kit for my yota US $185 Canadian $385,, Dorman brake hoses US $9.95 ,,,local Napa $29.95
Sure we have a very costly health care system but at least the gov't reimburses us for any fuel purchases

  18. The one that constantly pisses me off is paying a couple bucks more for magazines.
Our dollar is at par if not a touch above.
    U.S. price/ Canada price. WTF?

Personally, I'd be happy if we just switched to a common North American dollar... but that's probably too so******t.

I used to drive up to BC every couple years with the buddies for a cheap weekend of drinking, but not so much anymore.

Just paid $65 for a NAPA brand 'premium' coil. What a ripoff.

I wouldn't care about the prices here if UPS & FedEx stopped their brokerage fees. Would just order from the US. Money talks, ******** walks.

Postal service is fine for smaller stuff ($5 fee + HST), anything big you need a courier and you get ****d.

  22. well i can feel your pain as i [paid $13.00 for some stuff at mc Donolds that would cost about$4.00 in the states and they only have 1/2 a menue, cant wait for Omaha and cheep food:D

Welcome to Canada the "bend over" country. The oil comes from Canada and we pay about twice as much for the same gas as in the US. Its our f*$king oil and then we give the American Oil Companies a tax break on top of it!!! Tell me why the US isn't paying more for our oil and we get the tax break!!!!

Canada is the only country in the world that produces and exports oil, and has high gas and oil prices.

In Saudi Arabia high test is under a buck a gallon. In Venezuela diesel is 18 cents.

It would be interesting to have an expert accountant or tax expert figure the whole thing out. Possibly by investigating Home Depot or some other company that sells the same goods on both sides of the border to get an accurate comparison.

Hi .. We have the same problem here in Australia....I can buy parts and pay postage (shipping) from the USA and they are still up to 100% cheaper than purchasing here...I know business has to make a profit ..but having a long stick smacking you around the head is not on....I would buy 80% of my parts out of the US......

    Oh goodie, a political thread.

Let's get back to hot rods and customs.

  27. they claim the higher prices are a result of higher overhead BS maybe a little but not all of it.
