Been working on a bud's '48 Merc (Canadian Ford) short door that has a 400 Pontiac w/400 Turbo and a 8.2-10 bolt. It's got a BAD crank type noise coming from the motor (#8 cyl. - most likely a bearing, we think). Anyways, on to my question: I've been told that Buick, Olds, and Pontiac 350/400 Turbo's all have the same bolt pattern at the bell housing. Is that true? Also, does Cadillac also use the same pattern? We're looking for a replacement candidate and are wondering how large our range is. Thanks all.
472, 500 and 425 Cads had the B-O-P pattern along with the 66/80 Sevilles with 350 R in them that has a short tail shaft.
The one thing to beware of is the tail shaft length. Pre-'77 full-sized Caddies had long tailshafts that might not bolt into your space without a driveshaft modification. By the way, if he's interested in an overdrive, a 200R4 with a B-O-P pattern will also work behind the Pontiac. Lots of them to be found in pre-92 GM wagons with the 307 Olds motor, or in GM RWD midsized with the 307 Olds.
Thanks, guys. We've been looking at all Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Caddy motors and have been told that they do interchange with his '69 Turbo 400. We've also been told that they don't. It'd be nice to be able to find a good '60's big block to get his hot rod back on the road with. He's easy to please and just wants to drive his car. Here's a pic of his car back in '07. It now wears 10 spokes w/skinnies out front.
I've got a '77 425 Caddy with a bad trans. Will the 200R4 bolt up in the same space w/o mods? edit: I should've stated a '77 Caddy.
Basically any GM V8 will bolt up except a Chev. I am talking bout the period from 1965 to whatever, the late 70s when they quit making real motors. A Chev will bolt up after a fashion, 2 of the bolts line up and I think you can drill 2 more. It will work but a little hacky. Can't believe Pontiac engines are that hard to find.
The pontiac will be the easiest and cheapest since that's what's there now. 400 short block ought to be easy to find.
