for you eagle-eyes aside from the rather commonly seen '51 skirts and 56 olds spinners, what else is "out of time" on my 50? Photo by Slim Pickens https://photos.app.goo.gl/DiK9ifxpzQRqCoPcA
I am not sure what "out of time" means but here's what I noticed. No hood bird. Louvered hood, Peep Side mirrors. Side front fender trim. No Hood emblem or lower hood bar trim piece. Could headlight trim rings might be 1951 merc?
it was the front fender trim that I just realized was from a 49. I've moved the dice to hang off the dash. (so you can't see them from outside) never realized the mirrors aren't stock either. duh. need to think about those... gonna go for a ride now
id loose the peep mirror, louverd hoods arent my favorite thing either, was this a Monterey? looks to have the stainless on the rain gutters or it that a reflection? loose the dice and lower it and it would be fine with me! clean merc..
was not a monterey as far as I know, and it isn't a reflection. It's [I think] some of that plastic door edge-guard stuff. Was considering loosing that. next time I have it out (I'm going to take some pictures so I can play with the look in PS. non-shiny rain-gutter, hub-caps, skirts, etc. (not that any major cosmetic changes like paint are in store for the foreseeable future...) She ran well today, except for not being able to get into 1st at one stop. shifted okay later tho.
how are they different? since this pic was taken, I replaced the ds ring (it had dent). the replacement was different than what was on there; new was lighter/thinner. however, the new matches what is on the p***enger side. (?)
Your headlight rings are probably correct, from what you describe. 51 Merc rings were mostly die cast zince and were wider and much heavier than 49 and 50 which were stainless. In any case, you have a nice looking Merc. And with the little changes suggested on HAMB it will be outstanding. You said you were having trouble putting it in first gear when stopped. To remedy that first move the shift lever into the 2nd gear position and then into first.
thanks Fordy. (extremely clever handle btw) so maybe the DS had a 51 on it. Yes, I know the 2nd gear sync maneuver. Don't really know how or where I learned it, must've been when I first drove it (early 90s). But I surprised myself, six months ago when I was behind the wheel for the first time in 15 years. wouldn't get into low, my conscious didn't know what to do, but my arm and sub-consious did! Didn't work in this instance.
You would know if it was a 51 ring. The 51 rings sort of recess the headlight as if it were frenched. Is the car converted to 12V? The bulbs themselves look sort of flat like a sealed beam conversion bulb.
maybe not a 51 then. car is still 6V. those are (were) sealed (I think). actually, just put new ones in a few months ago, also sealed. I didn't start this thread as a suggestion box or critique spot, but that's OK Intent was just a "Hey, look at that!" moment I wanted to share. I guess we have a split decision on the hood. When the day comes for paint, I'll have my spare stock hood (and trunk) painted at the same time, to keep my options open. My main concern right now is figuring out what new tires to put on...{ducking}
I have the 2 1/2" WW on mine I don't like the Full WW where is the Antenna usually its on the P***. side Nice Merc just my 3.5 cents
Don't see too many green ones, I like it! You're right up the road from me, hope to see it out there this year. Tires? Yup, Firestones from Coker. Join the alliance first, will more than pay for itself.
Thanks Guys. Yes, the Firestones are front-runners now. Wondering how the stance will change as those on now are L78s, WW about 4" Yes, I will get out of my Zipcode once she's got new shoes...
messed around with the look in Photoshop. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7706352#post7706352
