If I put one of those in my car the 'man' can track me down, mannnnnn :O

Just kidding, that seems like it would be helpful in a worse case scenario

It's not really anti-theft if you turn on AFTER someone has stolen your rig.

I think it is a great idea, especially with the back up battery in case the thieves disconnect the regular battery. I think your insurance rates go down too if you have one of these units.

From the reviews,it sounds like it is being used more for a husband or wife tracker.

ebay, go to "gps burglar alarms".. less than a hundred.

NEAT? the ones that take "snapshots" and email them to you.. and location, and give you the option of operating a relay function,( say a taser?? )

Are there any devices on the market that do not require a yearly/monthly fee?...One that you can track from a laptop ?

After having 2 cars stolen, I have a GPS tracker in everything I own. My insurance company gave me a 20% discount cause I run them in my vehicles.

Another solution would be to get another cell phone added to your plan and be able to track it live for around $10 a month. Hide it somewhere in the car and connect it to battery power - this also give you an emergency cell phone.

I have heard that Lojack is a great system. Planning on running it on mine when it is finished.

I thought the same thing. Sorta like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted....
Prevention may be a better alternative, rather than any potential retrieval after the fact.

  15. I have a Garmin GTU10, love it, I can follow mine from a CPU or my cell.

The only downside is you need to keep a close watch on your battery or have a separate battery source for the GPS. :)

We had them on a good many of the fleet vehicles where I used to work.
The GPS would kill the battery in 7 to 10 days ... if left uncharged or the vehicle being driven.

    I keep a Battery Tender ... on both my 32's anyway :D :D

well it may not be an "anti theft device"..but if you catch the theifs after they steal it, it sure could end up that way..or,if the Police and courts see to it to keep the theif where they belong.

there are also other options, if your the DIY type

  18. Well i rather like the idea, ive had two cars stolen in the past. Maybe this way i can leave the police out of it and show up myself. Theyd wish they were in a comfy jail.

Yep, what he said. The *******s would definitely want to call the police... kinda hard to do with no freakin hands.

  20. Somertimes one needs to adminster sidewalk justice to the bad souls....
The Garmin has a Geo fence that if it leaves, it will notify my CPU and cell phones, I can then look at where it is and begin seving justice....

does the garmin have a monthly fee?

  22. This morning at the parts store, we had a customer come in for some industrial filters and while he was at the counter signing his invoice, I saw a mid 40s woman walking briskly down the street towards us and I'm thinking she is after parts, right? Nope! She jumped in the customers running and unlocked 2012 C3500 Chevrolet truck and hauled ***!! He says "THat ***** just stole my truck!" He then calls his HQ and they turn the tracker on and call 911, 15 minutes later he gets the call, they caught her doing 100MPH at I-35 and I-44, about 8 miles from here. Yep she's locked up and the truck was okay, should have locked it and turned it off, but, another tracking device leads to another capture as John Walsh would say!

If I'm not mistaken LOJACK needs to be tied into your local PD. If the PD doesn't have the LOJACK tracking equipment in their cars they can't track the stolen car. Might check it out before you put down the $$ for a LOJACK depending on where you live.

Wouldn't it have been much easier to SIMPLY TURN OFF THE TRUCK'S IGNITION, AND REMOVE THE KEYS in the first place?
Instead of praising his gps, shouldn't we be questioning his ignorance for INVITING the theft in the first place?

    Ed,
You'd be suprised at the number of folks that jump out of their running vehicles and run into the post office/parts store/Allsups (7-11 clone) around here. And it seems like most of them are diesel pickups for some reason.

As I understand it, this device does not alert you when the car begins to move. It will only track it. If it's stolen overnight you won't know it's gone until you check on it in the morning. Then you start tracking.

I'd like to find a unit that notifies you by cellphone when the car/trailer moves, then tracks it, and does not have a monthly fee.

VehSmart will do this - it will even tell you if your vehicle is towed.
No monthly fee and it includes roadside ***istance.

Only snag it has to be an OBD2 vehicle. I am trying to find out now how to make it work on earlier cars

  28. Special Ed, you are right, about keys and locking the trucks, but, here in oil patch USA, these guys leave the trucks running everywhere! And I mean everywhere! I kid you not, a hundred a day in my parking lot that never shut off!

And the tracking device they use plugs into the OBD II connector, how hard is it to unplug it and throw it out the window?

My Garmin GTU has a yearly fee of $55 plus an optional E mail and text service with a "GEO Electric fence", you merely locate your unit on your Iphone or CPU and draw a line around it that if it leaves it will text and Email you to let you know! Plus it leaves "cookies" along its route and you can program a speed sensor to alert you as well. Cheap when you consider replacing your pride and joy! And yes, I have Grundy Insurance, but I really want to keep my cl***ic cars, not the money....

For the money, I don't think this extra piece of mind can be beat. The moment you notice your property has been taken from you, having the option of opening a laptop to see exactly where it is! Great find!

True it shouldn't be called anti-theft, but it definitely is theft recovery which is sweet!
