I had signals on my coupe and all of sudden didn't flash. I ***umed flasher replaced it and same problem. Respective lights will light but not flash. Switch is column mount aftermarket. I have researched but nothing on point. Bad ground? but why light up? bad switch? thanx for your help. larry
It sounds like you mean that the signal filiments on each side will light up bright, but not flash ? That sounds like a defective new flasher, or a very heavy duty flasher that needs more bulbs to make it trip. A flasher is just a self resetting circuit breaker, the light bulbs come on and cause a draw, and the bimetallic strip switch in the flasher heats up and breaks the contact, then cools to reconnect again.
From what I understand, the power goes through the flasher to the switch, which determines the direction the power goes from there. If the lights get power and light up, I wouldn't suspect the switch or the grounds to the individual lights. Does the flasher have three blades or two? If it's three, the third blade is ground. If it's two, use a circuit tester to check the flasher. Connect one prong to +12V, connect the clamp of the circuit tester to the other blade, touch the other tip of the circuit tester to ground, the light on the tester should blink and you should be able to hear the flasher click.
Are there any dual filiment bulbs involved? Make sure one filiment isn't touching the other and causing problems. Check all the bulbs as feedback from one can cause wierd things.
You didn't happen to replace any bulbs with LED's did you? LED's dont pull enough current to make the flasher work. And the third terminal on a three prong flasher is not a ground terminal, its for a pilot light. Some cars and trucks only had one pilot light on the instrument panel that flashed with the turn signals. Also the add on blinker switches usually use the three prong flasher since they have one built in pilot light.
ALSO Does your wiring system include a separate flasher for the hazards? If so you may have replaced the wrong flasher. The first flasher I see is usually for the hazards! G luck. peace
I guess I should have been clearer, if it's a modern, relay style, three prong flasher, the third prong is ground.
Look for a bad bulb as well, that can make you nuts. If you have a spare one, swap it around until you find a bad one or not.. then it's something else. Bob
Yup! it does I did! Thanx for the clue! They are now functional and I feel appropriately stupid! At 70 you can still learn something new! I appreciate all the responses! larry
