Has anyone converted to LED taillights and replaced the flasher to make them work? If so, can you give me the info on the flasher you used such as number or model? I have a 2 prong unit. Napa guys say that they are not electricians so they have no idea which one I need. It is my understanding that just because it says "electronic" doesn't mean they will work with LEDs. Apparently I need a two prong electronic unit with a ground pigtail or use a 3 prong unit and make up a pigtail to be able to ground the 3rd spade????? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't have anything with LED's but just had to help a street rodder buddy with the same problem. Since LED's require such little current to operate a normal type flasher usually won't work properly. You need what is called a 'no load' flasher, it's electronic and doesn't depend on current draw to operate. I know Summit sells one for $10, part # FF552NLF
I've changed most of mine. Napa...Sheez. Try the Poulsbo store. Ask for Bill or Dick. They have had all mine in stock. 9"
Blazer EF-32, it's a two prong, power in, load out. most auto parts stores have them, the basic circuit works as battery power in to one terminal the other would go through the turn signal switch and when connected to either the left or right circuit that completes the circuit through the bulb. it doesn't require a ground, current flowing through the flasher completes the circuit.
I used this flasher mentioned above to flash a single warning LED in my center console, and it works just fine. I think it was around 8 bucks off of the shelf
Thanks to all of you. I have a 12v system with the small chrome bodied lights hidden behind my grill for front turn and park lights. They probably don't use much amperage each. I replace the taillights with the LED lights designed for the 40 ford. I just ordered three 2 prong with pigtail units for my 40, my 24T and a spare. I find if I have a spare, I rarely need to use them. lol I will let you know how they work when I get it set up. Merry Christmas Fourdy
a standard flasher is nothing but a circuit breaker, when enough load they break the circuit. and they can be over or under loaded. and they wont work right. a led flasher is not load dependent. thats why they hav 3 wires power in power out and a ground when you present power they just turn on and off. thats why you need a ground. they will work with 1 light or 50 lights. i sell them at the kenworth dealer i work at all of the time. dont over do analzing this problem its already been solved . just use the right flasher for your car
these electronic flashers like the one i mentioned also don't need a ground, the blazer one i mentioned is operating one LED warning lamp and it works jut fine
I have LED taillights and use a hazzard warning flasher. They will flash any and all good bulbs and don't rely on amp draw as a turn signal flasher.
When using a electronic flasher you have to make sure that the terminal marked X is the hot side. A regular flasher is not polarity sensitive but electronic ones are.
