I have aftermarket wiring in my '62 Ranchero.I'm not sure if the ignition is wired correctly. The car starts correctly but there is a heavy red wire left over? also I am wiring in an altenator and not sure where to wire the I terminal on the voltage regulator to the wiring. Thanks for any and all help,Ken N.
I could show you the stock wiring but seeing that it is aftermarket it would be hard to figure out what your "red" wire is without knowing whose wiring kit it is. This is the stock Ford config for alternator/regulator but again not sure how that will relate to your kit. hopefully it may help. and the stock Falcon wiring ( sorry not Ranchero but not much different)
The problem is I bought it a few years back and just got down to getting it done. And when I bought it I had questions and no answers to email no number. They just scamed my bank account for $1700(no can't prove it but first and only time used bank card on line) since then I wish I used rebel. I do have several diaghram for falcon wiring but did not know to wire it the same because of this hevy red wire left over. My kit had no wiring for the altanator 'lights'ect I thought it was complete. Thanks for Your help Ken N.
ive wired several universal after market wiring kits and there usually three thick size wires that are the hot wires, usually you have a wire from your battery to your starter thats hot , then a wire from your starter to the ign. switch (so now your ign. switch is hot) then two more wires go from the same post one feeds power to the fuse panel(making you fuse panel hot) and then the other wire goes to your headlight switch(making it hot), so all together you should have three decent size red wire to the one hot post on the ignition switch..........thats where your extra red wire might go sometimes its hard to pigtail all three wires down to that one post so might for some reason got left off(if you dont have power to your headlight switch or fuse panel).....then you should have a acc. wire ,and a ign. wire ,and a sol. wire , and some time a ground wire that goto the other posts on the ignition switch.... check and see what you got going on back there..
how many post on the alternator? 1 wire gm alternator? ford?indicator light or ammeter? this might help depending if this is the same style voltage regulator your using: The diagram posted is correct if you have an indicator light however if you have an ammeter the wiring has a couple differences. With an ammeter the I terminal is not used. Also the switched power goes to the S terminal on the regulator. The S terminal on the alternator is not used with an ammeter. The other 2 connections are the same for both systems.
