Im thinking about leaving the shell of my 29 Chevy Hot rod in bare metal. Has anyone done this? Ive heard of using WD40 and a scotch brite pads oc***ionally. Is there anything else out there? Or some type of clear coat?
Shark hide is what I'm using. They're proud of it but it works. You can get it direct from there website and the guy has his phone numbers including his cell phone to call anytime day or night. Really nice guy that seems to be very sincere about customer service.
After that ****py biker flick in the early 90's with Mickey Rourke and Don Johnson dudes were all over that look. I had quite a few clear coat bare metal jobs. Against my better judgement I sprayed over the raw metal and the clear surprisingly didn't know the difference. Use a catalyzed urethane clear. Get a nice random pattern with a DA sander and go for it. Different grits yield different looks. I would go at least three full wet coats because I've seen color change and faint rust begin over time when I applied any less. I pinched this pic from another thread here. This takes it a couple steps further with DA freehand flames and candy. Bad***.
Here's an interesting read. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-323872.html Also, Google Gibbs penetrating oil.
