I got this out of what I believe was a 55 Ford but I know it is not a Ford 9. I know this one is a Ford 9, I got this out of a 57 Ford. Any information on the first one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Josh
first one looks like a 55 ford rear. Used from 49-56, it's a Ford car rear, it doesn't have a "number" name like the 9" and 8" etc.
Second diff you show [the leaf springs still attached] I believe is an 8" ,judging by the multiple ribs. dave
They're ok if you have a stock 55 ford. The other rear is a 9", the early ones had more ribs than the later ones. You can see the shape is the more oval 9" center, look at some pics of the 8" and you'll see it's more square, and the pinion support does not hang down so low (you need an end wrench to get the two bottom nuts off a 9" but a ratchet will work on an 8")
The second rearend is the same as the one I have under my 59 f100. The parts I have to buy are for an 8.8. It is a 9 inch rear end in my opinion. I do not know what the first one is.
On the second one, if you can put a socket on the bottom nut where the pumpkin bolts on it's an eight inch. If you have to use a wrench to get it off it's a nine.
If it came from a Ford-O-Matic car there are guys that would like to have it because the gears are more highway friendly. If it is complete with the drums you could probably post it in the cl***ifieds for $100.
or more----I'd put 175 or 200 on either one of those after a little cleanup and 6 bucks worth of rattle cans if they weren't all seized up. The more you do to make them usable the more they are worth.
They both still have a tag on them. That may be worth something by itself. The ratio first number may be under the flange of the nut, but the other two numbers should be visible.
The second one is a 9 for sure, it going to be used on my 29 Model A sedan. I also took the other one because it is narrow as well but I do not know much about them or if you can even get parts for it? Is it strong? The place that I was at had alot of the first one and the Chevy rear that also has the front drop out center. I even saw an early Mopar one in a Coronet as well that dropped out the front but it was not a 8 3/4.
The 9" is a 57 model. A lot of people like that year because the housing is round. The later years had a bump out for the ring gear. I may be wrong but I think 57 was the only year like that.
