better be the rear. I've run 15" wide rims with 10 and 12" back spacing. No problems. And they didn't look like FWD rims.
Better have those springs way in also. It would seem he has a rear end thats a bit wide and does not want to cut it down in width. OP, just look at all the new cars today. Then ask yourself the same question again.
The mopar muscle car guys are famous for stuffing wide steelies under a car and running huge amounts of backspacing.. They usually run the stock width axle and move the springs inboard. Mopars have huge wheel wells and seldom need mini tubbing. My plymouth swallowed my 15x10s with no mods at all. Just a 5.5" backspacing. Other than looking goofy when you have a super wide tire that has the same amount of front lip as a skinny steelie..., they drag race on them all the time.
That's additional weight and stress on the wheel bearings and axles when you consider the fulcrum affect. That's 6" of weight past the axle bearing and 2" behind it. Most OEM rims were roughly centralised but each to their own. I know I did it years ago, just for the looks.
That's what's on my 07 Chevy truck, most other Chevy trucks since the last few decades. Also same set up on my fwd 92 cutl***. Neither one has tapered roller bearings.
I've got 15X5 rims in front and 15X8 in the rear. I wanted the same front spacing so I had Wheelsmith make a pair of 15X8 wheels with 6 1/8" backspacing so the fronts and rears looked the same. He told me that 6 1/8 was the max for a 8 inch wide wheel. I've had no problems with mine, they balanced perfectly. Here's a pic with the trim rings and caps on. I was a Boondocker member in the early 70s, seems like forever ago!
Her's a pic of the wheel unmounted. My painter wasn't to sure of the color, so we went with black in the end.
^^^^^ Are you sure it's not the lil girl in the photo that didn't like the color. She has that not so happy look .
That's exactly what it was, she said " Papa, I don't like red ", I told her she was spending to much time listening to people on the HAMB. Then we got out the black paint!!
2 inches. I believe, I never really measured to see the difference. They are fibergl***, came as a package with the body, which is from the old Shay Replica molds.
RE: deep backspacing. If on a fat-fender, might get interesting when you have to change a tire. I found it difficult to get the tire into the fender opening and over the axle from the front. One pal with 5-1/2" bs on 8-1/2" rim jacked car way up, laid tire face down under brakes, then angled it up from bottom and into the fender well with success. Otherwise, if no emerg-cable, suspension rubbing, no problem? hrt
That's great to hear. Keep that lil girl close to your side, she's gonna be your best friend for life.
