Bear with me guys, I'm a 63 year old geezer trying to get back the ability to post pics. After my wife passed in November, this computer has been through so much I'm surprised it still recognizes me!
If it works, I'll delete later. Thanks, Mike

  2. Wow! I thought I was using the size for message boards. Is this too big? I don't want to overwhelm anything. I know zip about computers. Thanks, Mike

BTW, I'm using Imageshack. It was easy

Sorry about the wife, prayers sent....

BIG motor + little car = HOLD ON TIGHT.....

  6. OK, rather than delete this, if you guys will indulge me, I'd like to start a thread on this O/T build. I'm up to my gazots in Dr. visits and the Ft.Worth swapmeet this weekend, but I'll try to get the greaseslapper down off the jacks and roll it out of the garage enough to take some pics of what I have done so far. That is if you guys don't object.
I fitted the windshield yesterday, and I've gotten both doors unglued and opened. Thanks to all you guys here for your support. Mike

Mike, your car is wicked cool. Love it, get some pics posted now that you know how.

Sorry about the little lady. I can only imagine how tough thats been. I have the best wife in the world and would not know what to do without her. I'm your age and have been fooling with computers for over 20 years and still don't have a clue, so don't give up, it gets better.....

  9. This is the frame I'm working with. 2X3 square, suicide front end. I intend to put in a roll bar mostly as an aid to get in and out of the car, but also to protect the gas tank sitting behind the seat. All my research tells me I've only added about 75 pounds over the small block that was in there. However, this motor is about 6" closer to the radiator.
I've changed my mind, again, and plan to use a 350 turbo instead of the Saginaw 4 speed. It will be sooo much easier, and I'll pick up some foot room.

  12. Looks like a fun ride! And the pics you're posting are exactly the right size. Yeah, don't delete the post. Just click the edit button on the bottom on your original post and change the title so everyone knows what this thread's about.

I think Ryan or one of the mods can change it for you, just PM them and tell them what you would like it to say. They are pretty good about that.

Nice build, the BB should make it scoot pretty good. What are you doing for more crossmembers in the frame? Reason I ask is the added weight and torque will put some new stresses on it.

Also, I add my condolences. Working on a hot rod is good therapy. :)

  17. Sorry about you're loss.

  18. THats seems the perfect size for me. Great project.

  19. Don,
Interesting you should ask. Best I can measure, I'm at 116" wheelbase now. Everything seems like it fits OK, when my main rails are level, the carb pad is level, and I'm square all around. My fan comes out dead in the center of the radiator. But I noticed the other day that I get about 1/2" of sag in the main rails when I set the car down on it's own weight.
That's with Chassis Engineering motor mounts, and a tube type transmission crossmember under the trans. I have a hoop to go behind the dash for the steering column mount, made from, I'm guessing, 18 ga. , that I haven't welded in yet. That will be the surface for my firewall. I t will also have tube back from it for the toe board to mount to.
I thought about supplementing the trans crossmember with additional tubing to make a "k" frontwards and backwards, and I also intend to install a 1 1/2" roll bar right where the rear kick ups are. It's really mostly for looks, but I'll use 16 ga. anyway. It will have two brace bars back to the top rail of the kick up.
I was also thinking of replacing the driveshaft hoop that I foolishly took out, and what would be a sub floor in a steel car will be 16/18 ga. 1" square. That will support the wooden floor. I also intend to move the upper shock mounts from the top of the rear crossmember, to the bottom so I get that extra 2 1/2- 3" of suspension travel. That will also get a 30" tire down "into" the wheelwell where it should be. I'm hoping that moving the coil overs will get my drive shaft out of the cockpit.
When the car was in it's race weight, with a small block and a powerglide, it came in just under 1500# so I can add plenty of steel. I just need to figure out where it will do the most good.
I have given some serious thought to buying a new frame, but most of the A frames out there are basically made the same way this one is aside from the kick up, and the suicide front end, and I already have this one on it's wheels. I mounted the engine simply to make sure I could get the big fellow in there before I started hacking and pounding. Everything is just tack welded in at the moment.
I'm open to any ideas. The frame is literally the backbone of the car.

I'm working on the greaseslapper and trying to clean out two years of accumulated shit at the same time. This is what happens when you only open the door to the garage to throw something out there. Add to that the fact that the car is sharing space with three! Triumph motorcycles. Oh yeah, and a vintage Yamaha XS650. I have too many toys!
I'll get it done, now all I have is time.
I still haven't learned how to post multiple images yet, every time I go from image shack back to the post, I loose all the information I had in the post before. And, I promise I'll PM Ryan to change the name of the thread.
Also, my apologies for the clutter, I usually drag all that crap out on the drive to work on the car, but it's trying to rain here.
Now, progress. I got both of the doors unglued without doing too much damage to the paint. Reason that is important to me is that this is one of the last cars the famous Ed Crawford did before he passed, and I'd really like to keep the lettering and striping he and Mike did.
I got lucky, the original builder simply slathered some resin in the door jambs and pushed them in.
More images to follow, sorry they will be individual posts. Mike

Got the windshield fitted. Still need to bring the top of the dash up to meet the lower windshield gasket, I'll do that when I mount the dash panel. I haven't decided yet if I want to go to the trouble to make the dash/instrument panel part of the body, or to make it removable to facilitate gauge maintenance.
Since it's a glass body I have to make everything fit. On the other hand I have the luxury of deciding what I modify to fit what.
2" chop, Speedway aluminum posts. I've decided I like the posts the same color as the car, I'll have the windshield frame powder coated in some kind of nickle color along with all the front end parts.

What do you guys think of the badges on the valve covers? Too goofy?
I made some radiator supports that fit around the triangle air cleaner.

My friend Mike Herring made a hoop to give me a mount for my firewall, and a mount for the steering column. I'll also add some 1" sq. back at an angle for the toe board to mount on.
When I get a chance, I'll go get the 350 turbo from Mike Norris, and put it in so I can start on the sub floor. Then the car will come all apart so I can finish the chassis, and body, two different projects. Thanks, Mike

OK, one last for the day. I spend way too much time on this computer thing anyway.
I plan to take the 454! off the aircleaner, I think it looks goofy. But I will keep the stripe, even if it is a stencil. I love striping, but mine is too crude to be out in public yet.
    Thanks, Mike

  26. Since Ryan was nice enough to re-title this thread for me, I'm going to bump for the afternoon group. Thanks, Ryan!!

Hey mike, you`re doing a great job on thet roadster. I`m trying to do a `60s roadster the hard way using a rough old steel `29.

I like the direction you`re going with yours.

I posted pics last nite, but they`re about 6 pages down now.

    Keep up the goos work!

Front end question. This chassis was an altered in another life, and the original builder used a T-bucket style front end, I'm assuming to save weight. It may have been what he had, I don't know.
It worked well at 130 as an altered, with a small block. I have added about 75 more pounds with the big block, but I've also traded a spring behind axle for a spring on top axle. The car seems comfortable as it sets, stance is killer, front doesn't seem to know the extra 75 pounds is there. When I stand on the perch and jump up and down, it works as it should.
However, there is a ton of difference between sitting in my garage and tooling down the highway at 60.
Here's my thinking. I don't feel the need to change to an axle that uses a 29" spring. I'm thinking I could buy another t-bucket spring, rob two leaves from it and supplement the spring that is on the car now.
Typical t-bucket 26" spring is four leaves, typical A model 29" spring is seven leaves.
Two more leaves in this spring will have me at six, and I'm thinking that is sufficient.
I'm also going to replace the drum brake front end for discs. I'm trading tradition for safety. I'll do that any day.
I'm getting ready to blow this car apart to start on the chassis re-do, so if there are any "oh my God"'s out there, let's hear them now. Thanks, Mike

Another view of the front end, if it helps. Thanks, Mike
