hello i'm looking at a 60 olds 98 four door that has been chopped 4 inches the problem is the original gl*** is gone and they made plexigl*** windsheild and rear window unfortunately the sun destroyed them and now i gotta find someone who can make a windshield and rear window either out of gl*** or plexigl*** or lexsand i'm in the tristate area does anyone know what i can do about this thanks so much
talk to tri valley gl*** in cali they can make gl*** for anything . no need to run its only gl*** and some cash . if ya love the car this is your way to make it right.
Post pics of the car. Custom gl*** could run in the thousands to make a new windshield and rear window. It can be done, but not cheaply, and a plexi windshield is unsafe. On an earlier car, you could swap out the rear window section with one from another car, but a '60 Olds doesn't lend itself to that kind of swap. Fixing this car correctly might mean a roof transplant to put it back to stock height. The car might be fixable, but it is not going to be cheap or easy.
those windshields aren't as bad as the look. most of the gl*** removed is on the bottom corners. the compound bend at the top is the critical part. if it's a flat top sedan the back gl*** is a ***** to install on a stocker. might have to sink that one. no one will be able to cut that down without the car
Back gl*** can't be cut down regardless of body style as it is tempered gl***, not laminated safety gl***. Windshield CAN be cut, but it's no piece of cake.......takes skill and luck. If Armageddon had occurred and this was the last running car on Earth, maybe it would be worth some effort..........but it hasn't and it ain't Your choice............do what suits you. Ray
just looked at pics on remarkablecars.com of a 1960 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday 4-Door Hardtop. no one can give you proper advice without some pics of what you are looking at. but, it looks like would be a bigger challenge than most to cut stock gl*** to fit properly. you would also need backup gl*** in case something breaks during process. with your backround would likely be best to start with another body style. as stated anything is possible - if you have lots of skill and deep pockets. up to you.
I wouldn't touch it. This probably why the car is for sale. The cost of custom made gl*** would be very expensive.
The reason some of us say run is to try to save the guy from buying a huge set of problems. I could be wrong, but without exception every chopped fourdoor without gl*** I've ever seen for sale is a butchered POS. This one could be the exception. Might be a high quality build by a skilled craftsman, that for some reason liked plexigl***. Call me skeptical, but I'm doubting that's the case.
Let's review...... F1suicide user name Location: Jersey Shore interested in a chopped 4 door '60 Olds..... It all makes PEFECT cents...........
look up gl*** enhancement in Pa...they are very close to you or york road auto gl*** in warminster, pa. just make a template and they can cut.
IF, and that's a BIG "IF", the car was chopped right, you have 3 options. 1. Run away, the cost of putting gl*** in it is too expensive! 2. Have custom gl*** made for both openings. I know the custom rear windshield in the "Chrysler City Coupe", a Barris designed car, built by Jerry Kind, up in north Jersey, cost around 10K, but it was pretty large, and a second one (in case the first broke!) cost 2-3K, as the mold was already built. That was about 15 years ago. 3. If the metalwork was done in good quality, and the dimensions of the chop are good, even, symetrical, then you probably want to get some gl***, cut it down, and shape the windshield opening to fit the new gl***. That's up front, as said before, the rear cannot be cut, but maybe you can sink it down. If not, you'd have to use a different rear windshield and graft it in.
Another option is to locate an aircraft window maker. They use ultra clear acrylic plastic which resists scratching and can be formed when heated over a mold. Not that expensive and not affected by sunlight.
