I am in the process of pulling out the 235 with tranny attached out of the donor car. Problem is its in some mud, on an incline, and its kicken my ass. I cannot get this thing out! Need some ideas if anyone has any because I'm just about ready to take the body off and do it that way.

It might be worth it to have a guy with a wrecker come by and snatch it out for you. Might cost $ 50 or so, but it sure would be safer and save a lot of hair pulling.

Get it off the incline! I realize that is obvious, but you also need to get it on a solid surface if you plan to take them out with any kind of a regular lift. Being on an incline is going to force you to get it so high, that a standard engine crane will roll over if you try to pull it out away from the car...especially in mud....

Unfortunately it was the only place for me to put it was on the side of my house. I cannot get the engine to come out and everything has been removed correctly. The body and frame are shot so I was thinking on removing the body cutting down the frame and doing it that way, "sounds" easier than its really going to be, i think.

Pulled a nailhead and T400 out of a donor car on a steep hill. The only way I'd get under it was tie chains to the car, more chains to the hoist, and fasten them to the hitch on my F150. Welded up a wide, heavy wall T bar out of an old 2" hitch bike rack, and fastened all the chains to it. Plywood under the hoist made it work.
Calling a wrecker would have been easier.

pulling a 235 with the trans attached is not fun even in a shop with all the equipment you need...

    What transmission?

  10. Lord help ya Buddy but if getting things apart are this difficult what's going to happen when it's time to put it back together? Some things might be better put off until you have a better work spot.

Get some plywood under the cherry picker wheels. I've also used a 2 x 4 as a pry bar under the legs of the cherry picker to lift one side of the picker then the other when the wheels are stuck in dirt.

it's not very easy to get enough angle change required when pulling an engine and trans at the same time, you need the trans to hang quite low in the back so the engines oil pan can make it over the rad support, then you either have to change where you have your lift hooked up to or in some way change the angle its all hanging at so the back of the trans can make it over the rad support, you can buy those engine pulling gizmo's that change the angle or if your using a chain like i do i just walk the chain through the hook of my lift with a large screw driver.

Pull the core support or at least cut the top bar out of it. Pull the rocker assembly and lift it from the head bolts with angle-iron attached to a short chain. Center point s/b around #5 cyl. - Tim

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. To answer a couple of questions, its coming out of a 53 Bel Air that I have stripped down over the winter and cut the radiator bracket out entirely. I have the lift on top of 2 3/4 inch plywood and with 2 grown people pullin it, still can't get it out. I am really leaning towards the sawzall idea right now. Pushed the car up a very steap drivway with a friends truck and 3 people pushing it. Its not gonna come down easy..

My dad and I "pulled" an engine out of a car once by rolling it on its side, undoing everything that needed to come out from the bottom (some with the "gas hacksaw") and then rolling it back onto its wheels, pulling the engine/trans with the tractor and loader. The car was OT, and I only bought the engine out of it, the guy wanted the car and trans back, so we rolled the tractor around to the rear of the car, dangled the tranny over the open trunk, removed the bolts and let it fall into the trunk. Pulled it back on the trailer, dumped it in front of the guys house and left, dont even think we knocked when we dropped it back off, he was already paid for the engine.

Basically, if the body is already toast or you dont care about saving it, do whatever is easiest to grab the goods you need.

If you live in a rural or small town area find a tractor with a bucket or back hoe on it. It will lift out the motor in a minute. Or drag the car to a better spot.

Do you have a load leveler on the cherry picker? Assuming everything is disconnected like you said, you gotta play with the angles. With the trans attached you can't just lift it straight up.
