I have always wanted to attend Bonneville, but life would not let me. I am taking a new job and now have 6 weeks of vacation I have to use before the end of the year. What is the best time to attend or have I already missed the best? I'm excited. 58 years old and never really had a scheduled vacation. I will have to alot some of the time for my wife to choose but most will be car events. TP
Join us at the "Bend in the Road" (Free camping, Tons of great people) no sooner than Thursday before the meet. Stay until around Wednesday, it usually clears out by then except for the racers, and the cruise scene at the "Nugget casino" at the state line has pretty much wrapped up. Then head for Pleasanton Calif. for the Good Guys show the following weekend. Seeya there. Hope this comes out clear. Anybody got any other pics of the Bend in the Road?
Like they said. Bend in the Road is the place,, but if you venture to more 'comfortable' sleeping arraignments, most everything within 60 miles has been taken. That is not to say impossible, I have talked to spectators that walked into the Red Garter and got a room on a Friday. Read the article in HR magazine about what and where, they covered a bunch of it. And don't worry, the second time you go will be just as fun and exciting,,and the third,,,and the forth,,,, It is as great as you have read, and more than photos can show, well except for my calendar (sorry for the cheep plug).
Terry, Friday through Monday during Speedweek is indeed the best time to be there if you only have a short time to go. Friday is tech, Saturday is the driver's meeting and first day of racing, Sunday and Monday are when a lot of the serious racers go out for the first time to avoid the long lines on Saturday. Friday and Saturday night are the best nights for the impromptu car show at the Nugget. Once you go, you'll wonder why you waited so long to go out there.
Terry, as all have said Friday to Monday is the best...well Thursday to NEXT Friday is best..but....I'm driving out with a couple buddies in my '50 Chevy,Leaving from Houston, you are more than welcome to caravan if you are driving, or might even have a spot for you, but I come early and hopefully stay late. It is the coolest place ever. Hans
This link, http://saltflats.com/ will work for any event at Bonneville. Please scroll down and read Spectator Guide if you have never been there, and also the link on where to stay.
this is good advice, except i would hit the HAMB drags in Joplin the following weekend. that's what we're doing again this year...
[QUOTE Once you go, you'll wonder why you waited so long to go out there.[/QUOTE] I tell this to everybody who is considering going... It's the FIRST thing that I thought of when I stepped onto the salt the first time.
When I posted I was extremely excited about my new job. I still have to p*** a physical and take my D.O.T. drug test. I work in the pipeline industry and it is flow bore right now.It will take me a little while to get everything sorted out,but I am eligable to take my vacation time this year. I am going to really try and make Bonneville. Thanks for all the information and I will take it all under consideration. TP
I forgot all about the dates for Pleasanton... I'm going to that show for sure anyway. Tempts me to go out west early for Speed Week!! How many people usually go for Speed Week? I've never been there but realllly want to go but of course would just be spectating.
Just wondering how crowded it is there. The biggest event I've been to was Back to the 50's last summer and it was INSANE... there were like 12,000 cars there. Couldn't have seen them all if I wanted to.
Nothing like BTT50s. A few thousand folks spread out over 5+ miles of salt and around the various starting lines.
That's the beauty of the place, you NEVER feel crowded. The pits are a few miles long, There's a single line of spectators from there to the starting line for about 5 miles with many openings, then the starting line is about a mile long. IF you ever feel crowded, just do a 180 and you're looking at nothing but salt for miles. Here's how crowded it usually is...
