Nice project, way to think out of the box. Are there any negative results from pushing the fluid backwards? If the system has residual valves, will they be adversely affected or won't it bleed back to the MC? I like the idea of side to side though.

nope, if the fluid traveling upstream under low pressure while bleeding causes a problem the same problem would occur when you let off the pedal during normal braking operation.

Emptied the bottle in just a few seconds at half speed too. Any faster than that and it blows the hose off. What you cant see in the vid is that I'm soaked in a few spots from the test run.

Very cool!! Will this work in Place of "bench bleeding" the master cylinder also?

Yeppers!, no need to bench it as your going to push the air out of the piston and back into the reservoir.

I wanna make sure that everyone know how much I appreciate this one winning. It really means the world to me. Thanks again for the votes and for the accolades!

  16. Thanks for this! I will use this method from now on - I only wish I had seen it 30 years ago. Just think of the hours saved over many years!!!

Even though I was fortunate enough to have my tech article in the final 11, I knew that I was probably looking at the winner when I saw your write up. It's something that all of us will eventually have a use for and it's one of those things that make you want to say "why didn't I think of that".

Congrats on the win.....you deserved it.

Great idea, thanks for sharing it. I'll be using this as well.

I occurs to me that a master cylinder mounted below the floor is going to be near the same level as, or lower than, the bleeders. Might be a good idea to have someone sit in the driver's seat and put a little pressure on the brake pedal, just enough to close the ports to the reservoir, while bleeding across the axle. Once the crossover line and calipers/ cylinders are full, let the pedal up to bleed the feed line from the master cylinder.

I've also been wondering if this method will work properly on a car with m/c under the floor and the wheel cylinders above the m/c?
When it's a firewall located m/c, the fluid pumped in @ the wh/c is pushing the air bubbles uphill, aided by the bubbles rising on their own.
But it seems to me if you're trying to pump the fluid down to the wh/c the air bubbles are going to try to float back up to wh/c, impeding the bleeding process.
    Hopefully there's a solution? Anybody???????

should work fine, your moving the fluid faster than you can with a guy pumping so it should push the air out better. I havent tried it on one yet but pretty sure it should work.

as for pushing the pedal when bleeding across the axle, that shouldnt be needed either, with the opposite bleeder open the path of least resistance will be to the opening. Besides in this situation you should have residual valves in both ends and those will slow the travel of fluid to the M/C until after you've closed the other bleeder.

My buddy and I each built one of these brake bleaders and neither one will work . They will not pull the fluid up into the pump . They have to be primed in order to work . Looking for some help !

spin it faster and longer. It takes a bit to get it to prime up but it will.

I finally got my brake bleeder / pump working. I used an old FE pump that maybe one or two less steps to get it operational. Mine still needs work it is one leaky sob.

So far I can not get the fluid up into the MC. It pumps great from side to side. I took loose the line that runs back to front and it pushed it through that just fine. When I am pushing the fluid from any cylinder with all bleeders shut it just won't go to the MC, the pump builds pressure and (on my pump) starts spewing fluid at the pump as if the fluid has hit a brick wall. I filled the MC up some and pressed the pedal and it has no problem dumping the fluid through that direction.

Anyone have any ideas why I can't get the fluid into my MC?

My car has 4 wheel drums
    new single reservoir MC
    all new hoses
    all new wheel cylinders

This was a great tech article. pump idea works great, I think I am just cursed when it comes to bleeding brakes.

Kinda stumped on that one, if it pumps when you push the pedal the ports should be open.

Try again with the cap loose, maybe its building air pressure in the reservior. (just a guess, mine's worked on everything I've put it on.)

Tin man do you think it will push past 2 lb residual valves? I am about to build your wizz bang.
