Just going through some old magazines that I picked up for the car adverti*****ts and came across a real gem. This is from the August 2nd, 1954 Time magazine. They were doing an issue on the "do it yourself" movement. I think this is the first time I have personally ran across an original mainstream media mention of the hobby in such an unusual place. Anybody else?
The April 24th 1961 Sports Illustrated had some good Hot Rod stuff + a cover with Roth Sweatshirts "The Hot Rod Cult" was the ***le. The April 29th 1957 LIFE had a good several page article on Hot Rods with a good early Drag Race cover. I use to find these back issues for a couple of bucks each...not anymore, they both are up to $30.00+ now! POST magazine had a couple of good covers with paintings of young guys and girls and Hot Rods, I can't remember the exact issues though.
Pretty sweet! I know that even newspapers would occasionally print something about the cars or the car culture. I know I have seen reprints of the Life article. This one was just such a surprise, in the middle of all the "do it yourself" stuff they mention the LA clubs and even belly tankers. I dunno, but the little paragraph was a cool find for me...........hey, I wonder if my magazine is worth some$$$$
