I've got a question for most of you....How many of you can identify a stock 30 Model A from a stock 31 Model A at 50 yards?

That's sort of like asking that cop to know every law that's on the books, or what cars require a light over the the license plate.

I know more folks have talked themselves into a ticket instead of talking themselves out of one.....That is unless they were a big boobed blond:)

I thought about mentioning it to the desk Sgt or someone at the Sheriff's office, but they really didn't do anything wrong, they just were as unfriendly as hell. Any time I have ever had any dealings with the police once they realize you are a solid citizen they usually become human and will treat you ok. These guys were just like Sgt Friday........just the facts, Maam !

I did have the concern that they might be still suspicious that we were running some sort of chop shop and be just watching us, but it has been a few weeks and nothing has happened and I haven't seen them back around again. My other reason for not stirring up any problems with their bosses is because we drive hot rods with somewhat questionable noise levels and I really don't need anyone out there laying for us, especially since we tend to drive them often and this is a somewhat small town.

I'm just curious, why were you using hand signals? Does your turn signals not work? Your lucky he didn't give you a ticket for faulty equipment. Congratulations on your new neon pull me over sign now mounted to your roof.

"Copping" a smart attitude with a law officer just doen't seem like a good idea, whether your right or wrong.

  6. Those cops were spooked for some reason, what citizen in their right mind vacuums their car at 11 PM? Maybe cleaning up after having a body in it?

    Tail lamps.

    (1) After January 1, 1964, every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer, and any other vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least two tail lamps mounted on the rear, which, when lighted as required in RCW 46.37.020, shall emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of one thousand feet to the rear, except that passenger cars manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1939, shall have at least one tail lamp. On a combination of vehicles only the tail lamps on the rearmost vehicle need actually be seen from the distance specified. On vehicles equipped with more than one tail lamp, the lamps shall be mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable.

    (2) Every tail lamp upon every vehicle shall be located at a height of not more than seventy-two inches nor less than fifteen inches.

    (3) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of fifty feet to the rear. Any tail lamp or tail lamps, together with any separate lamp or lamps for illuminating the rear registration plate, shall be so wired as to be lighted whenever the head lamps or auxiliary driving lamps are lighted.

    Effective date -- 1963 c 154: See note following RCW 46.37.010.

Well I believe the part that he pulled in behind you in your driveway to tell you that your license plate light was out or missing as that is one of the things that they use here to pull anyone over that they feel like pulling over.
But as the car did come from the factory with a license plate light the bs flag goes up on the RCW part and I do have an older RCW book that does not show that exemption in it.

By the way if your light is missing here is one on Ebay Item number: 350520456873

the last time i got pulled over for speeding, the cop told he was going to give me speeding ticket.

i told him to stop lying and tell the truth that " he should say he was just collecting money for city council and the mayor" the cop was so mad he threw the ticket and my liecense at me and got in he car and raced away f$%^& mad. i guess the truth hurts.

Darn, it's too bad in some ways, and I'm glad in other ways, that some of you don't live around me...The Sheriff here is another hot rodder. He drives either his 55 Crown Vic or 55 Sunliner. Also you'll see him scooting around in the summer time on this Harley.

Now the State Patrol fellow for this area. He's another hot rodder. He was already to buy my HellRaiser, but I had committed it to another HAMB'r here. We still buy each other a cigar now and then. But he's got a job to do, and I know it.

For all the laws that you break, and got away with, how many did you get caught breaking?

Sure ought to make one proud to blabber here about how they put one over on some young, probably newby cop kid.

I always try to be nice and respectuful to cops when i get pulled over, but the fact is that most of them are idiots that don't even know how to do their job. Every time I get pulled over in my '57 I have to TELL them the laws pertaining to me and my car. They always leave pissed and I always leave with a smile on my face.

  14. It pays to do some research.
Illinois basically classifies ALL trucks as commercial vehicles, no what their actual use is.
In Chicago you can't park on residential streets, leave them overnight, drive on boulevards, etc. License, city sticker, and insurance all cost more.
So, in the early 90's, when I was using my '58 Chevie shortie panel as a daily driver, I looked at various classifications that might apply.
Somewhere, I found a statute said that to register a van as a passenger car, it had to have a passenger seat behind the driver's seat. Nothing about windows or upholstery.
I built a wooden deck to store tools under and added a piece of plywood on hinges that flipped up to form a bench. I copied the statute and carried it in the glove box. Used it 4 times in 2 years.

  16. Sometimes a sense of humor helps.....
I also drove a 64 El Camino for a while with A/V plates on it.
I pulled into a BurgerKing in Indiana once with an old 6' wooden ladder laying in the bed.
A state trooper parked next to me and said "what are you doing with a ladder in an antique vehicle?"
I said "it's an antique ladder".
He laughed and said "good answer".

I have a little trouble getting my head around the fact that you know the law so well but are so unfamiliar with your own vehicle that you are unaware of the fact that your car came from factory with a license plate light and turn signals as standard. If your turn signals were working why did you need to use hand signals as well? As for the cop copping an attitude (see what I did there?), there are nice guys and ass holes in every walk of life not just the police force.

I have a couple firends that are cops that are good guys, but the honest truth is that most of them are crooked ass pricks on a power trip because their daddy touched their naughty parts too much. I don't hate all cops but I hate MOST. That being said, I'm always nice to them, no matter how much it hurts.

I once was stopped by a state trooper in the parking lot of where I worked, because of using proper hand signals on my old Harley sportster...He asked me why I thought he pulled me over, I (21 at the time) told him, I thought he pulled me over because I used hand signals, which made him notice that I didn't have turn signals....he said that was correct. I explained that my 1968 sportster wasn't made with turn signals, they weren't standard equipment until 1972... he said, it sure looks newer than that, I said thanks, I fixed it up myself. He graciously made me extremely late for work, to the amusement of my boss (who had give me a payday advance to get the bike) while he verified my story.

The moral of the story ???

Even IF you are telling the truth, and following the law by using proper hand signals, the cops can make your life hard if they don't like your attitude....

    Yep.
Now whenever you two cross paths he will be extra diligent in looking for something to nick you on.

  24. (2) After January 1, 1960, every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer and pole trailer shall be equipped with electric turn signal lamps meeting the requirements of RCW 46.37.200(2), except that passenger cars, trailers, semitrailers, pole trailers, and trucks less than eighty inches in width, manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1953, need not be equipped with electric turn signal lamps.

Can you prove the car was built prior to Jan 1?

    RCW 46.37.050(3):

You might be able to make an argument for the turn signals but there is no "grandfathering" in this portion of the law that I see.

I think you were a jerk. If I'd been the cop I'd written your ass up for everything I could find and told you that you have the right to argue your case in front of a judge and that you have 7 days to correct the violations and present the car to a WSP inspection site to verify that the corrections have been made.

You are now officially on the Bonney Lake Police radar. I'd go into stealth mode, dude.

I earned every ticket I ever received. I deserved plenty of tickets that I didn't get. I know and grew up with law enforcement (dad ran combat matches for cops and civs.), yes they are human, but in general the only cops I have ever met were just doing their job. I know there's bad cops out there, or good cops on a bad days....

    Attitude goes a long way.

I just have to get my $0.02 in before this lame thread gets closed........the OP is full of shit as evidenced by the many other posters who have submitted proof that the 1960 Ford Galaxie *did* in fact come through with a license plate light.

And to disparage teachers and police officers who all have to have college educations as a requirement for their careers is just plain being an asshole with a bad attitude.

You, sir, are in for some future aggravation with your stupid *know it all* attitude.

    Get real.......
