Does the '53 Packard flat 8, share a starter with anything else, so we can widen our search ? Paul www.tikipaulo.co.uk
Packard used Delco starters that had a lot in common with certain GM models. But I don't know if any will directly interchange. They might, I just don't know Packards that well. Do you have the old starter? Parts are still available if it needs to be rebuilt.
hollander shows '51-'52 all exc 400 (not sure what exc 400 means). '53 200, 250, 300, 400, and '54 (clipper sdns. sportsters & Amb.) there is also another note thats says '50-'54 coe w/it-245 or 55A eng. also there are no cross make interchange listed. i thought some Chrysler stuff might work but nothing is listed. hope that helps
400 = the Packard 400 sedan, Packard's top of the line model. It used a special larger engine with 9 main bearings. Lesser models used a different engine with 5 mains.
There was, and maybe still is, a 51-52 Packard in a junkyard about an hour from me. I've got parts from it before, engine was complete. I can check and see if its still available.
Which straight eight Packard? There are three. 286, 327 and 359. That may also help you in your search. There starters generally were also used on many other motors of the same vintage. Normbc9
