Was flipping channels last night when I came across Hot Rod TV on SPEED Channel. The show was about the build of a Giveaway car being built by of our own hambers HOT ROD CHASSIS AND CYCLE in Addison Il. The guys there built a 1964 GTO for the Raybestos Company. Did anyone else see the show? It may have been aired earlier but I just saw it last night and it will be on a few more times. Check it out. Kevin Tulley and Chad Hill of Hot Rod Chassis and Cycle do an awesome job with this build. By the way, they also did some work for me and my son as we were building Lucky Strike. First class shop and operation. Congrats to Kevin and Chad and the entire staff for a job well done.....Check SPEED Channel for times this show will be viewing...definately worth the watch...
I didn't put it all together until the Detroit Autorama, but I think the builders are here on the hamb, used to organize the Hunnert Car Pileup (which I will surely miss) and member(s) of the Chrome Czars in/near Chicago. The car is very cool.
i watched the show last night while they do awesome work its a shame they put aside thier morals and things to build that .... at the beginning they were like all we do is pre 64 if it wasnt/isnt pre 64 we dont do it then they build this LS engine T5 trans 6 piston caliperd efi 64 gto granted the publicity will help them a great deal and like i said its an awesome build but i wouldnt have pushed aside my beliefs to build it and i completely understand the modern brakes (seeings how rasbestos was footing the bill) but i dont understand the LS and the trans at all
Thanks guys! As for the last post, we had several internal discussions about what building this car would mean to our mission statement. It says right on our website that we will work on '64 and earlier or any year race car, so we felt that it would be fine. Not only do we love traditional hot rods and show rods... we love racing. We pushed hard to retain the factory 389 Tri-Power, but since this was a corporate build on a car that is a dead brand, Raybestos dictated that we use a modern motor. EFI... it's a Hilborn... they're the leader in injection and have been for decades. The trans is a T-56, not a T-5. A T-5 wouldn't last 10 miles behind that LS-X 454. When Kevin drove it out to New York to Watkins Glen, he averaged 17 mpg. I don't know how much gas is in Ohio, but the prices surely do suck in Chicago. I can't imagine that a 700hp 389 and a Muncie could perform similarly. We DO use vintage engines in 99% of our other builds though. At SEMA (and after) we've tried to ask as many of the build partners as we can if they felt it was worthwhile being involved and all of them said yes, definitely. We've had a blast and learned a lot about road racing too. Money talks. Bull shit walks. I would shoot myself in the foot if I had a corporate company of that stature come to me and ask me to build something like this. I have a 64 galaxy 2 door hardtop I want to build this way. Will take me YEARS to get it where I want it. These guys do top notch work. It actually gave me a few ideas for my galaxy while watching them build theirs. Congrats guys. Awesome build!
As was every single 64-65 GTO ever produced. An option on a lemans. 66 was the first year the GTO had a vin designation of 242. Nice build guys ! When the big money wants you, you have arrived
Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) has records on every GTO and/or LeMans. Yes the GTO was an option on the LeMans back then but that's as close as a LeMans gets to a real GTO.
The '64 GTOs where not an upgrade of LeMans; they were upgrades of Tempests. My first car was a '64 GTO. It is a Tempest GTO.
You needed to order the LeMans option package to the Tempest to get the GTO package. The chrome trim found on the LeMans/GTO was exclusive to the LeMans/GTO only and could not be ordered on a Tempest. You will never see a GTO in Tempest trim or vise versa. I do realize that they were known as Tempest GTO's but that was as close as a Tempest ever got to a GTO. I've had many 64's & 65's.
The HAMB is dedicated to spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and kustoms to hoodlums world wide. That’s right – TRADITIONAL.
Quality work but not my style. I'm not a real big fan of '64/'65 GTO's in the first place...........on the other hand, '66-'67's are some of the best looking cars of all time IMO.
Totally agree, but in a sense that makes it even cooler. I don't care for those, but they MADE it cool.
If we all had the same taste it would be a boring world. Definitely a nice build and dig the injection set up. Personally I'm a Pontiac die hard and gotta have a pontiac injun in a Pontiac. And with all of the aftermarket blocks and head choices, there's no excuse not to anymore.
