Wow. Thats pretty cool. When I read what you posted, it came across to me like you were refering to the mounting points, so thats the way I read it. No hard feelings. What the guy is proposing is dangerous, and I have seen cars with broken shock mountings back in the seventies/eighties due to just this reason. Its really a bad idea.

The title is redneck air-ride, i think thats what is setting off alarm bells for most of us. You are right, if he had posted the question with a different title, he would probably get a different response. Redneck air-ride DOES imply that major changes in driving ride hieght is precisely what he wants to use it for, and I have seen broken shock mounting points first hand in cars that used air shocks this way.

I ran Gabrieal Hi-Jackers on several cars in the early 70 s and they were designed for just that purpose and were run with factory springs as a matter of fact GM installed em on el cominos as load levelers.Friend built a killer 54 ford and remove some leafs and runs air shocks with compressor and gate valve and works really well.I would think that set up is more safe than leafs and bags.Just my take:D

mr. beachbum is right. he just wants a little extra clearance. yall aint scared him off, he's just busy with his family.

  5. I picked up an old Cadillac air ride compressor to use in my 59 Plymouth Suburban wagon with air shocks someday. Beside the compressor it includes a valve so that I can control ride height from the drivers seat. One like this

Make sure the tires clear cause back in the day my brother used to use these to fit n50 tires on his chevelle till a tire got cut in half one night on 495 from a leak, sent him spinning, when we showed up to tow it he was sitting on the median crying about his car.

  7. He needed to roll the inner lip of the fender with a baseball bat. I did that to clear some N50's on my 70 1/2 RS Camaro.

The wagon just needs some extra load capability occasionally.

I use electric skinner valves to fill and release. For load leveling only.

  13. They do still make manual air valves that can be used for air bags or your shocks. You connect the air line to it then another line to the bag/shock. The only thing is when you release the air it blows out the back of the valve.

    lots of places sell these.

Just saw this one that will turn on a compessor and fill the bags/shocks at the same time.

looks good dude do what you what, just keep it safe. If you decide to go further, you could piece together a budget air bag set up with air fittings to fill and dump. The lakes look dope crushing the cans, lol

It is an electric air valve, one to raise and one to lower.

I did that on a '49 Chevy by running an air line loop to a switch in the dash, and using a dump valve. I used a Monroe air pump, and it worked very well.....I dropped the air totally when I wanted it to set very low when parked, then pumped it up to drive it.
Ran it like that with no problems, but as said above, never drove with all the air out...
    Cheers.........

what you need is a small tank. hook your compreser to it and install a bleeder valve like on a air brake system..when your done pull the cable and down you go...

That comp that Kerry posted looks like the one I used out of a Seville before I put bags on my heap. It's horribly slow going up or down.. I 'upgraded' to this thing. The dump is a 12v air solenoid I found at a scientific salvage house. It was only slightly faster but worked great for boosting up the rear of my '60 Olds to clear the rear bumper on steep driveways.

I really can't believe someone would actually want to do that . That's NOT even a Redneck idea . That's just a really STUPID idea ! Just because Joe Dickwad down the street did it doesn't mean it's a good idea .
Just do it right the first time so you won't have any issues down the road .

Some of repaired the damage to the cars that those things did when they broke the shock mounts too.

At least 30 years of Cadillacs have air shocks on the rear with a compressor under the hood as standard equipment to level the car when you put a load in the trunk or in people in the back seat.
My 76 Seville, 79, 82, 85 and 88 Devilles all had that setup. They can work to maintain static ride height on a lowered car pretty easily and I'm thinking about using the pump and switch with auxiliary overload bags on my 48 for that.

I could see the setup on a tail dragger to be able to lift the rear bumper for clearance to get over a driveway entrance when you aren't interested in doing the airbag thing.
