A Joplin restaurant icon, in business since 1923, has just recently closed it's doors. The owner, Larry Wilcoxson, decided it was time to retire at age 69. For those of you who've been there and sat at that horseshoe shaped counter with it's 22 stools, and had some spaghetti red or tamales..... you know what's been lost. Larry has been trying to sell the place for quite a while, but no takers. They shipped bricks of chili all over the world. Here's a wikipedia link to some more info on the place....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_and_Red's Mary Ann and I would go there for lunch on New Years Eve day....did that for several years (along with a few other times as well). So, farewell to another good place to eat, not far off Rt 66.
Interesting, ...enjoyed the link, learned all kinds of stuff about regional cuisine, didn't realize I'd been makin' & eatin' "spaghetti red" for a long time w/o knowin' it! I'll have to try it with vinegar! Found out about "Frito Pie in a Bag" too, have had that also, ...but never in a bag! Looks like the kind of place I'd frequent, I bet some of you locals will miss it! Sweet little Mayflower ragtop by the way!
Thanks for the kind words on the car....... We do still have a burger joint called Stogey's Coney Island. But their spaghetti red isn't as good. Burgers and fresh cut fries are the thing there.
Now that you made folks hungry here's a fix: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Beef/CincinnatiChili.htm Wonder if there is something in the HAMB cookbook?
Hmmmm, that's to bad about "Fred & Reds". The wife and I have always enjoyed walking thru the old outdoor flea market a few blocks from there, then stopping there to eat lunch.
Damn, I just moved to the Joplin area and wanted to give it a try. I heard that it was a must have item.
