Here in MN you register the trailer and they give you a permanent lifetime sticker that goes on the front of the trailer frame near the hitch.
Even a rinky dink 4 x 8 utlilty trailer is required to have one.
When I had my boat and trailered it out of state, I always wondered if I would get pulled over since there was no visible plate at the rear.

  2. Been that way here in WV since the late 50's. Even car dollies and little trailers for cycles are licensed (and taxed). We even have to have annual safety inspections (and stickers) on our trailers. It's all about the money!

Oklahoma has had non-registration of trailers under 10K GVW for a LONG time. In fact, until just recently, you could not even voluntarily register a trailer as an individual. You had to have a business license, and then you could get a non-expiring trailer tag for $57.00. Three years ago, they finally offered a "private trailer" tag for $7.00 per year, and they issue a plate only - NO ***le! I never got h***led out-of-state for not having a plate (except once, in Nebraska!), but I wanted to tag both of my trailers. So, for $14.00 a year for the two, it's not a big deal, and I'm certainly not going to be h***led by the local Barney Fife somewhere out-of-state for a non-registered trailer.

For registration, you use the stamped VIN you find on most commercially-built trailers; or on a home-built, you can use your driver license number as the VIN. Works well.

Lots of non-registered trailers in OK get stolen and end up in other states that do not require registration, or go to Mexico. When I sold trailers years ago, I refused to deal in used trailers, unless I knew the seller or otherwise was certain of the origins of that used trailer.

N Y had tlr registrations as long as I recall..... So Carolina didn't require it,....but you had to stay in that state.....circa 1964, thru 1968... Please dont mention calif dropping the "lifetime" trailier registration....they come up with enough garbage as it is !

The Ohio law folk are probably used to looking at the tow rig's tags and the ***uming that KY trailers won't have tags. Oregon didn't have to have tags on at least some trailers and They get towed through Washington all the time were all of our trailers no matter what size have to have to be registered and have tags. We have had to register our trailers as long as I've been old enough to know what tags were.

Didn't know about the tag law , but I will add this. The local troopers on this end of the state have written several tickets for overweight 16 footers [Couple of lawn mowers and such] that weren't covered by regular plates. Mostly for lack of a business license for commercial mowers. Ky a few years ago quit issuing 10,000 lb plates unless you ask for them specifically. I keep them on my pickups and have not had a single issue. That could change though, I know.

Be glad you don't live in Illinois, trailer plates cost approximately $10.00 per 1,000 weight. A 10,000# trailer cost over $100 a year.

Come to New South Wales, Australia. Trailers have to be regoed and inspected every year, $159 per year plus $30 inspection fee. Even dogs and cats have to be registered and you get fined if you don't pick up their turds.

    ****** oath,

That's my biggest grumble about living in NSW it is the highest taxed state in the great old land of AUS. Stamp duty on houses it the biggest killer it cost me a little over $4k for my last house. Lucky we get paid so much more than our US brothers and sisters. An $80k wage in australia is equivelant to a $55k one in the US. We pay $2.60 for a can of coke at the servo and the US pay 79 cents. Our carton of mid strength beer is $40.00 and theirs is about $18.00. Cigarettes are about $18.00 form a servo here and they are about $9.50 in the US from a garage.

Dont feel so bad about fuel guys we are paying around 6 and a quarter for the gallon. and we travel around 20,000 miles a year because of the distances a lot of us travel to work. In 3 hours in the US you can travel across most states in AU that would be about 1/4 of the way accross the state your in. WA takes 22 hours from top to bottom (on the ashphalt then another 12 to 16 hours on the dirt) We have low road speeds because of Kangaroos our highway speeds are generally around 60mph but for the distances we travel it takes for ever. We have one state with higher speed limits they used to be an open limit until a cannonballer crashed killing four people. They knocked the limit back to 90mph but I think it is now 80mph.

Fines are excessive for speeding for doing 15mph over the limit you can be slapped with $716.00 fine and lose 5 demerit points Which they only give us 12 of every three years. Lose all 12 and you can't drive. Our police are savage they have cameras hooked up to computers in their cars and on the roads and they can check the licence plate of the car and if it flaggs that the owner has been disqualified from driving you can expect to get pulled up for a licence check. These cameras also check to see if the vehicle has current registration for the 12 month period (tag).

But it all comes down to the population of the nation to keep prices low. But then you have to put up with overcrowding.

And this has what, exactly, to do with hot rods? What's the big deal? Go buy tags for your trailer(s) already. Get over it. Pay your money. Shut up.

Sorry we are having a conversation about trailers. Some do use them to bring home projects. I guess it's just not traditional enough to talk about it here.

I just reregistered my trailer here in Ohio. Up to 4000 lbs, you can register it as a Non Commercial trailer, with no ***le. But starting this year, you have to have the color of the trailer on the registration to keep you from switching the plate from trailer to trailer.

In Kansas you have to show proof of insurance to buy a trailer tag.
