If you see an apparent misleading or duplicate ad, what are we to do? When I say duplicate ad, I noticed an ad from ND and then an ad from the Chicago area, different sellers, different prices, but the same pictures in the ad.....the moderater, removed my post, which is correct, but what can we do?

  2. If the ad is in the HAMB's cl*** ads I suppose a quick note to Ryan would be in order. Send him links to the multiple ads and let him deal with it.

About a year ago a guy in England (if I recall) had the same exact thing for sale as I did! Same pictures, same description, same price, same photos taken in my shop!!

I changed my bong water and that didnt work either!

  5. If he was asking to be paid by Western Union then he was probably in Nigeria and not the UK. Beware NOBODY in the UK uses WU.

Click on the REPORT ****on in the lower left corner, and send a note. That should be the quickest way to notify a moderator.

This was a real problem on C-List a while ago. I was looking for an O/T 4x4 tractor and it seems that most ads were a scam. Item was located out of state and owner was moving, divorcing, getting deployed, take your pick and he would ship the item and you could return it if you didn't like it for n/c. All payments to be handled through Ebay to protect the buyer. Total BS. Don't see as many anymore so maybe C-list started to crack down and the crooks are moving to other forums.

About three years ago a friend of mine got scammed really slick. He responded to an ad for a 1950 Ford 2dr Sedan. The guy selling it was in Phoenix AZ, the Car was in Bullhead city. So Joe ponies up a $1000 deposit to the guy advertising the car. I take my pickup and trailer and go with Joe to Bullhead city and meet the guy who we were told was the uncle of guy in Phoenix. He would collect the remaining money and turn over the ***le and the car. When we got to Bullhead city and met the guy who had the car he knew nothing about the guy in Phoenix or the $1000 down payment Joe had made. Are you starting to get the picture. Long story short the guy in Phoenix made $1000 off of someone else's car and skated. We did make a deal on the car from the guy who owned it.He felt bad for Joe getting taken for $1000 and cut Joe a pretty good deal on the car. Moral of this story make sure who you are talking to and who really owns the merchandise you are trying to buy.

Awhile ago I was looking at cars on CL and I showed my daughter an ad for a car that was way underpriced and pointed out to her that such ads are always scams. I searched some other sites to find another example of that car to show her what they were really worth. In my search I came upon the exact picture of the car on CL (Same color, background and everything) on another site and at a much more realistic price. I showed it to her and said "see what I mean"

Wasn't there some sicko who was going on forums asking for donated parts so he could build his Son who was deployed overseas a hot rod as a surprise? I think he was even on here asking. Turns out he had no Son overseas.

Now there is a guy who deserves some jail time.

  18. Don I think that was a couple of years ago. He was all over the internet with his tear-jerker story. His name was something like "G***erT" , from San Antonio, texas, claimed he was a VietNam Ex-POW, and was trying to gather up free parts for his supposed deployed son. He was gonna build Junior a car for his home-coming "with the help of <snivel, snivel> caring fellow car lovers".

Seems his claim of being a ex-POW was bogus and and the POW Network dogged him like white on rice. His name was simular to others with "g***er" in their name, but he was definatly from San Antonio http://www.pownetwork.org/phonies/phonies.htm

Happens all the time. A friend of mine in Seattle, Wa. called me a few weeks ago to ask me why I was selling my car. I told him it wasn't for sale, and he said it was on Craigslist in the Seattle area listings.
Crooks grab pictures off the internet all the time, then simply copy the listing, or make up a new listing using your pics. It's not rocket science, even for somebody who's not a computer geek.

There are two or three such adds a week on the local craigslist. I've flagged who knows how many that show a car that should go for 20K listed for 3 or 4 k. Thinks like 2008 Dodge diesel crew cab 4000. I doubt that they are being sold by a pissed off widow who has to give the proceeds to the dead hubby's girl friend. The ones here are most often a car listed in the "furniture" section.

One thing that a guy could do on here is to put something in the photo that identifies the item or photo as his.

I had a guy try to sell me an Amphicar. When I asked for pictures he sent me a picture he described as him in the car just the week before. Odd thing is that not only must he have been my inknown twin brother, his car even looked so much like mine that the boat reg numbers were exactly the same as mine! Yup, he emailed me through my site followed by a picture taken from my site! Not very bright. So I decided he was too stupid and maybe an easy mark that I could make time for him. I screwed with him for 2 months. I even got him to send me $150 so I could get a lien off my record which would allow me to get the loan to buy the car. That was some sweeeeet money! Scam the scammer!

You could put text or a watermark in your photo that identifies it... but scambay also known as ebay won't allow text... :

Borders around pictures, and text added to pictures, will no longer be allowed. Watermarks for attribution purposes only will continue to be allowed.
