The trans is top loader 39 car with enclosed driveshaft.
Has a 40 to 48 clutch linkage lever,
    use 49thur 53 starter,If 12 volt they sell a mini starter,
measure clutch guess its a 10"could even be 11"
If having trouble with assembly put bell first then trans.
    maybe don,t matter.

Trans could also be a pickup, anywhere from 40 to 53, which came stock with that throwout shaft. But the output would have been changed, since the pickups after 1940 had open drive.

There are more expensive starters than stock, but I dont know if they are better. Those old ford starters work great on 12 volts. They dont seem to know the difference.

The flathead and trans have been in the '40 truck for a couple of years, no problem with bolting them up. I've put the first 16 miles on it the past week and going through and trouble shooting some things. I used the original cluth and it looks like I will have to replace it in the near future. The starter has got stuck a couple of times(running by it self) Took it out and need to replace it.

Pull the pressure plate and measure it, but it looks like 10" to me. I would use the stock starter--they are very good units.

In fact, I don't think there is any major difference in starters from '32-53. There are at least a couple of different housing types – a longer one with a shorter end plate and a shorter housing with a longer endplate – but they are functionally the same. Same drive, tooth count, etc.

I have changed out my starter five or six times over the last couple of years on my F1. It is driven daily and I sometimes drive back and forth between a couple of different office locations though the day so my starter sees a lot of action. I have had two broken Bendix springs and a few issues where I have lost contact from the hot wire right inside of the housing. (one time actually ended up being the solenoid)

I have been holding out on buying a modern gear reduction type... I generally just pull another and swap it since I have a shelf full of replacements. But the next time I have an issue I might give it a shot purely for comparison sake.

By "stuck," do you mean that the starter remains energized, or that the Bendix is sticking? Thoroughly clean the Bendix, grooves and all, with solvent and ensure everything moves freely. Do not lubricate it! Reinstall and give it a try.

Great info guy's! Thanks. I just got a Bubba's chevy to Flathead Dizzy. What is the best way to drop it in on one or just before one as the markings are 4 degrees advance and not TDC?

$5 says the clutch is no larger than a 10" ,could be a 9.5 also.

Power Master mini starters work great, bolt right in, worth the $$, and sound like the old skool item ! I vote for the 10" clutch,........

Starter stay "running".....Is the solenoid sticking "on", and keeping power on the starter ?
