Before I get chastised I thought I'd better say hello. Last thing I want to do is tick off a bunch of people looking at photos on the Internet that I'll probably never meet but be forced to listen to them whine about me not endearing them with an appropriate greeting. :p

    That being said,

    Hello.

I'm Greg from Chicago, IL and I restore vintage Chicago police cars.

You can munch on all the popcorn you'd like waiting for an argument to start up, but you're going to be waiting quite a while. I've got more important things to do- like enjoying the thousands of photos and conversations that this site has to offer in its various threads.

I thought this was supposed to be an introductory post: A "who you are and what you do" type of post. I told you who I am and what I like to do. I restore police cars. The photo is to show off my work, not be a vintage shot from 1964 or older. If I restore one from earlier than 1964, I'll come back and repost another photo of that car too.

Okay, so maybe you employed a poor choice of words in that opening paragraph. Read it with a bit of distance and you may see how I...we...could easily misunderstand your intent. Sounds....crabby. A very unusual introduction to the HAMB. Imagine a guy walking into your garage and starting off like that. Maybe being a bit less agressive regarding your acceptance would be a good idea.
No matter, you are welcome here, but bring smiles and you'll find us a friendly crew.
    And, one more time....Welcome.

    Welcome from Kansas.
Yep, we'd rather you step "on"it rather than "in" it.
After you restore them do you sell or collect them? How many have you done?
On a side note, I've been to Chicago once to see the Navy Pier and start Route 66. We went around the block by the Chicago Art Ins***ute - the Start Route 66 sign is on Adams and the End Route 66 is on Jackson if I remember correctly. My wife was afraid to drive in town, and she was using our new camera with little luck. I must have circled the block 8 times before she got a photo we could call worthy. I can still her her say "I got nothing!". We laughed all afternoon.

Welcome from Indy. C.P.D. saved my **** once when we were visiting. The wife and I and two kids jumped off the bus at the WRONG stop and found ourselves in the uh..er...rough side of town. Chicago's finest pulled up, looked us up and down and said " get in the car" He took us to our next stop...NICE!

Much better intro Greg, Just to let you know, post '64 cars aren't well tolerated here. A lot of flak gets handed out when a person states in their intro that they have '70 something "rod" with this and that tacked to it. This is a traditional hot rod and custom site, most all of us here live and breathe "hot rod". I'm sure that your restored police cars are cool, very nice, and some people really like them, they just aren't traditional hot rods. Enjoy the things H.A.M.B. has to offer. Excuse me now, I think I smell my popcorn burnin'.

It seems lately that ANY side is getting to be the wrong side of Chicago. I've got 25+ years on the job and it's never been worse. We are out manned and out gunned by the bad guys and the bureaucrats running things in city hall don't give a rat's *** as long as the sheeple keep voting democratic so they can keep their jobs. We lose an average of 500 officers every year to retirements, etc., and the city has hired less than 100 new guys in the last 2 years. That's why we're 2000 POs shorthanded.

I have 4 years to go and I can't wait to get the hell out of here.

To answer Willy P's question, I'm currently restoring my 5th CPD car, a 1973 Chevy Belair. I have had a hand in at least a dozen more. We have approximately 20 restored Chicago PD vehicles in the metro area that we use for shows and civic events. All are privately owned. 90% are owned by active police officers or retirees. The oldest car in our vintage fleet is currently a 1954 Ford. Most recent is a 1990 Chevrolet.

I also set up a 39 and 40 Ford for the filming of the WWII Iwo Jima movie "Flags of Our Fathers" directed by Clint Eastwood back in 2005.

Unfortunately, the markings and lights were removed after the filming

Welcome from Oklahoma. My dad was born and raised in Thornton and was an early barnstormer around the Chicago and surrounding area. The plane he learned to fly in is hanging in the Museum of Science & Industry. Again, welcome.

Welcome Greg, nice collection of work. I chatted up a guy years ago who restored a 66 Chevy Bel Air CPD squad car at the Chicago Auto Show or Chevy Vettefest I can't remember. It was nicely done and on display next to a new Impala or something. Maybe 5-6 years ago? I dig those old cop cars for sure.
