...just sittin' here trying to visualize a dash with no guage bezels and no gl***...just the needles sweeping across numbers painted on the dash...any ideas on how this would work?...how to mount them?

    yeah, I need a life...

Start with the biggest straight across speedometer from the mid/late 50's and go from there. Or use one out of a 57 Buick Roadmaster that has a red line that comes across and no needle and have the speedometer head behind a slot cut in the dash so all you see is the white/red line and your painted numbers.

Even simpler yet...I had a FED with no gauges on it. The dash just had the words "Go Fast"

I'm not sure where you would start, but I'm digging that idea. I think that would look sweet.

...or paint a woodland scene on the dash and glue various Disney animals to the moving needles? :D:D:D

Seriously though...some cool dashes DID use odd ways to get their point across. Wonder was there ever a thread on those odd dashes from over the years?

Keep thinking on it Larry. You just might pull a rabbit outta that hat! ;)

Remove the gl*** on the guage and extend the spindle holding the needle to your desired length. Smooth the dash, mount the guages behind the dash, poking the longer spindle through a small hole. Re-attatch needle, paint your numbers and good to go!

    But don't:cool:

One of my bugs years ago had a dash that was just a bead rolled piece of aluminum with the headlight switch in the middle...

This is a kick *** idea and I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Paint dials right on the dash, mount gauge to back of dash, stick needle on gauge sitting on surface of dash.

I'd love to see someone do this.

where did you get your avatar?! she's my dream bikini girl!!

er, where were we? no reason why it couldn't be done, but those needles would be vulnerable to damage.
1959 Vauxhall cresta had a circular guage wuth no needle, just went from green thru amber to red as you got faster. you would just need to mount it behind your dash with a crescent-slot cut in your dash, and no needle to get damaged.

getting off topic slightly, ever see a Citreon CX dash from the late 70's? Like a fruit machine, completely nuts

Mount the guages behind the dash... flush. Take piece of plexi-gl*** (exact same size as dash panel) and rout out where the guage faces are. Then mount the plexi-gl*** in place. You'll have a flush dash and the needles will be protected.

The only time I'd worry about hitting the needles is while cleaning the dash...and I rarely clean anything...

My buddy plans to run no gauges. He is just going to glue an Earth magnet to a GPS unit and use that for speed. It's close.

    I like your idea though.

If the Google Gl*** Project comes through you'll be able to transmit all of your gauge readings to your Google gl***es, no need for a dash at all (if someone writes an app for it).

Right outside that " traditional square ".
Just paint the dash a flat non reflective color , and project the "dash and guages" onto it like a fighter aircraft heads up display . For that matter project the heads up display right onto the windscreen and have nothing at all on the dash!! or have some sort of rear projection screen built into the dash .
Not really on topic, but still possible !!

  22. Those movements and needles are so delicate they need to be protected.
That's why all of them are behind gl***.

It sounds interesting, but you have to remember the gl*** is there to protect the needles!!! One errant swipe and you literally wipe out your gauges. Gary

and you could use a sun dial instead of a clock.

  30. ... and here I thought I was thinking outside the box by coming up with gauge lenses ground to my eyegl*** prescription!
