Help I,ve spent ten years wanting to run at Bonneville. Now that there has been a shop built. a tig welder bought, lathe ,mill...tools tools tools..I built a frame jig out of I-beam.Built my custom frame. Now Im told there is no cl*** for a 1947 WILLYS-OVERLAND.P.U....It is a highboy...& stretch..200 mph is a short wheel based p.u. not what i want to try...they dont have a compe***ion pickup cl***.. yes Im venting....please advise me on who to cry to about a COMPE***ION PICKUP cl***...look at all the change in the racing world...have you seen the barstools for bonneville...THX
"May I mambo dogface to the bannana patch?" Your post isn't all that easy to understand, but it sounds like rather than bulding a vehicle to race in an existing cl***, you want the sanctioning body (SCTA/BNI) to create a new cl*** for the vehicle that you want to build. Sounds to me like a very backwards way to try and get into land speed racing.
You can run TO- Time Only but you still have to have ALL the safety gear. There were some guys with a "pickup" similar to what you are describing pitted next to us last year.
Indeed...ithought this would run in modified p.u. cl***...didnt understand the rule book...running for time only...sure...im thinking a comp.p.u. cl*** would be a welcome addition to the field...
Good luck. It only took veteran land speed racer Ron Benham about 10 years to get rear engined roadsters approved to run in the modified roadster cl***. The powers that be in the SCTA are not easily convinced to make changes.
1. Go here: http://www.scta-bni.org/ 2. Get a rule book. 3. Read the rule book. 4. Read the rule book again. 5. Build your racer according to the rule book. 6. Go race and have the time of your life!
This is a grand example of why you should understand the rules before cutting metal. However I believe you can still run your truck in the corresponding coupe/sedan cl***. Is it real important that you run in a pickup cl***?
no i just want a cl***.....Ive made a phone call to a Mr.Davies.very nice guy...running for "time only" not what i want to do....I HAVE A RULE BOOK...understanding it is like understanding the BIBLE......I dont know anyone who has run at Bonneville...I went in 2002...every racer I met was so nice..I stayed until i couldnt stand it any more...
Savethesalt, There are several people in your area that have have been to Bonneville. Some have done whole or part construction of Bonneville racing cars. Go by Stroud Safety and see if they will talk Land Speed Racing with you. He is building a PU for Bonneville. Have you tried http://www.landracing.com/ Loaded with stuff. Seek and you will find. Hooley
This suggestion is a bit after the horse has left the barn. Login to www.landracing.com, join the LSR Forum(click at top of front page) and get some advice. There are many, many experienced salt racres there eager to help. I saw your email to Steve and agree with him on the time only deal. The truck will not be accepted into the Comp Coupe cl*** as there are now specific truck cl***es. How many comp trucks do you envision being built? Why did you you proceed with this build without consultation with SCTA officials if you could not understand the rulebook? Look in section 17, plenty of contacts on those pages. I think your best bet may be to gather your 6 buddies together and plan on what type of body can replace the truck. You mentioned you have a ch***is constructed. I am sorry that we didn't communicate before you cut pipe but, contact me if you think I can be of ***istance. Dan Warner dw230@yahoo.com PS. May I suggest you give up on the addition of new cl***es. In my 45+ years of LSR I have found that you may meet with some resistance.
You got it already SCTA and USFRA. BUB is bike only, pretty sure your truck won't fit there. And you gotta earn a spot at Cooks Shootout.
Build a bike and you can find a cl*** for it. But I haven't seen any bike cl***es for Comp. Pick Ups. Savethesalt. Dan Warner has given you some very wise words. If anyone can help you Dan's the man. So far the body replacement advice is the best.
Well, no, that's not the case at all. Or, to put it another way: There were a lot of guys who decided there were enough cl***es and didn't see the need for a Cl***ic cl***... all the roadster and pre-49 guys ran together, and everyone after ran together... if you didn't want a '53 Studebaker to compete against an '89 Firebird, well too bad. So expanding the fields aren't a bad thing. (I'm really surprised you'd say that... that's the kind of elitist at***ude that has hurt SLR racing, in my opinion.) I agree with the OP that there should be some more truck cl***es... they're pretty limited, and cl***ic trucks are certainly popular. I don't see why they don't duplicate the auto cl***es in the truck ranks. Running a vintage truck against a modern, rounded, areo truck seems about the same as running the '50s cars in the same cl*** as the modern cars. -Brad
I don't see why the OP didn't get a rulebook and study it before building his "pickup" Not elitist, realist. Stop by Tims #416 pit this year Brad, would finally like to meet you!
Sometimes you just have to take what you get. I'm working on a 1911 Indian board track twin for BUB. There really isn't a compe***ive cl*** for it, vintage cl*** is 1955 and older. I don't stand a chance of a record. But who cares? It's the doing Bonneville. Records are cool, but so is having a chance to run a machine there. Time Only still lets ya run, and if you get some kind of cl*** where you are seriously outgunned, so what? You will be there either way. That's my take on it, at least.
Yes, some of the rules are goofy, and straight answers are not always easy to find. But it is better to figure stuff out ahead of time, than to pray you will be ok.
Hmmm, We do LSR cars right here in okc, have some experience in the construction , and running of them give me a shout in Mustang Woodard Racing & Hot Rods swoodard4@cox.net
