I'm looking for help identifying what year this lincoln transmission would be.

    40-41 (26 tooth gears)
    42-48 (25 tooth gears)
    49-51 (28 tooth gears)

It was in a 1941 car, but the car had a 49-51 v8 motor, not the original V12... not sure if transmission was original or came from the 49-51 donor car?

It is something in the '40-48 range for sure, so likely original to car. See if the serial # stamped near top of the trans bell casting, right above the little sheetmetal cover, matches the car's ***le. If not, there must be a list of Lincoln number ranges online.
Post the first part of the number, first few characters with the H...quite likely that has a digit for year right in it.

    Hi Bruce,

I will have to ask the fella to look for me and send me the #'s. I was hoping there was some obvious visual differences between the years but you are right, numbers always tell the tale.

    Thanks.

Is the rear of the transmission set up for a torque tube or does it have a slip yoke? Torque tube is original Lincoln; slip yoke is '49-'50 Merc.

Aha! Mac VanPelt has added the H motors to his serial number page:

    http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm

Torque tube hookup isn't in the pic, but the pic does show all sorts of Lincoln specific hardware, so I think it is going to Lincoln all the way back.

There were some minor OD parts changes over the years, don't have the list handy, but I don't think there is any visual difference a****st the V12 side shifters...I wouldn't guess without looking at serial prefix.

    So the bellhousing reads 7HI6I962*

    Which falls under:

    1947 Lincoln V12 76H 7H-152,840 to 7H-174,289 (According to the website)

    Thanks for your help guys!
