My buddy Lynn (8-ball) on the HAMB stopped by and we monkeyed around with the roadster. The aprons have been part of this build since before I got the car. But when it comes to hot rods, less is more.

The aprons were giving me trouble at every turn and I decided to take the sectioned one off. The look is starting to grow on me, it looks like a hot rod now. Ignore the jack under the car keeping the rear wheels close to where they should be. I think I finally nailed the look and it ended up being the simplest route. I left the stock apron in the stock location on the p***enger side for comparisons.

  2. Now yer talkin.... Like that look MUCH better than the aprons being left on. Aprons go with fenders. No fenders, no aprons! Good decision. I'd cut about 2 inches off the windshield and straighten it up a bit (less angle). I believe you'll get the same result as far as protection. The good thing is you can play with the angle easily.

Well I managed to get the body back in the stock location. So if I'm wallowing in self doubt next week I can always get another apron and throw them back on.

    It does look kool though.

Does that screw ya up even more?

  16. It may be just me, and ill admit that I'm kinda funny about stuff.

First- The rear wheel needs to be centered in the arch.
If i want my ride lower, then Im going to move that arch up, IMO nothing looks worse that the body lowered down between the wheels without moving the arch & That's a whole lotta work. Your car has that, I like it.

Second, having the body 15-18 inches off the ground on a hot - rod looks very silly to my eye. Some 4x4 trucks aren't that high and youll have a difficult time finding a 2wd with that much distance under it.

To my eye, the 32 frame helps the ground clearance visual issue by 6" automatically. It's not the little reveal by itself or the taper, its because it makes the car thicker and lower. Your aprons were doing just this very thing. Maybe just me, but the first thing I notice is wheel center heights to body heights relation. I don't think the body should be above the wheel centers, to me that looks like a mud bogger. I also don't think the tires should be above the arches, that looks like a ****-up. That said, there's plenty plenty if both out there. Not many with the extensive modifications.

You'll be happy for a while and change your mind again.

Decisions decisions. It will drive you crazy Scott. Removing the aprons does make the car look thinner and higher off the ground and moving the body back to the original position eliminates the need for a longer hood but then the rear tire is not centered in the wheel well anymore. I still like the sectioned apron and centered wheel well look but ultimately it boils down to the look you like.

No self doubt ! It's about time to let go of the apron strings and stand up and be a man :D

I totally agree, that aprons go with fenders. No fenders , no aprons.

More hot roddish without the aprons and fenders. Traditionally, isn't that the kind of stuff they took off? Oh, tilt the windshield forward. That rake hurts the looks a little.

After our discussion at lunch about it, I had to come take a look.

I agree with most of this, except I’m not as picky about the wheel arch. If the aprons go, the stance needs to come down a bit - although external exhaust may help make up the difference, especially if it’s thick like a torque tube.

I kind of like the stock apron, myself. It has that “I just took the fenders off to run at the lakes” look.
