I am trying to finalize my decision on what model shoebox I am going to purchase. I thought I wanted a coupe, but I think a lot of the chopped cars I had seen were sedans. So if any of you guys can throw out some pics of different chopped models of shoebox fords I'd really appreciate it. Also, can anyone give me their 2 cents as far as buying a stock type ride, then having it chopped vs. buying something that somone else already chopped. I'm new to this, and this will be my first custom that i'm doing. Thanks . Luke

Thanks guys. Janne, that homepage you sent me to was amazing so many killer shoebox's. I definitely have narrowed down the chop I want to do now. These one's stood out as having the "look" i'm goin for in regards to the chop http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_..._cars/49-51_ford_customs/541484_167_full.html http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_...ustom_cars/49-51_ford_customs/66222644mx.html the other car I liked the chop on ,but couldn't find a link to is frank battaglia's 49 shoebox that was featured in ol skool rodz, I think he's outta san diego . It was in the same issue as the one that had jesse james' 54 chevy ok, here's a newby question are both those first 2 hardtopped? I know the first one is because it said in the pic description. I also was trying to get an idea of how much of a chop those have.
if you do a search there a couple ,2 or three at least, posts on chopped shoeboxes that span a good 7 or more pages youll find what your looking for there. and yeah those two are hartopped---there isnt a door post between the drivers window and the back seat window, its just one big hole
Yeah, what Tim said. Search shoebox ford and you will find more pics than you'll know what to do with. Question for the HAMB. Has anyone seen the custom 3 window shoebox coupe built for Billy Gibbons? It's called Copperhead (may be spelled different though) I have it in a book, but have never been able to find it on line. I find references to it in articles, but no pics. It's really a tasteful custom if anyone has seen it.
If you hard top one of them and remove the post, can you make a way to have functional windows? Or is that pretty much out of the question once you do that modification?
Click on this link and be prepared to be amazed. (Hardtop window info inside) http://photobucket.com/albums/v295/Kartsa/Lincoln/ Lots of really good information. Chris
yeah the glas can work, some make working rollup windows all around and some just slide in though its totaly possible to do whatever you want. dont know how it works? go find a car with out a pillar. a 60s galixie, a new import gl*** is gl*** doors are doors its preety simple to figure out once you have one to look at. as far as the gibsons three window it was features in hotrod? about 6 years ago i think with a decent spread tim
Thanks Loogy! Man, I don't know why that didn't come up when I Googled it. I even spelled it right (unwittingly) from memory in my search.
Hey Luke, As ya probably figured out by now, the two door sedans work better for a smoother line flow, through the roof, than the business coupes. By the time ya lay that rear gl*** foward to chop a business coupe ya don't have a whole lotta roof to carry off that smooth line, through the roof, that shoe boxes need to have the look. Makin' a hardtop out of a sedan can be done, but you'll have as much time in fabbin' the window frames and rebuldin' the b-posts, as ya do in the chop its self. Good luck
Anybody remember or have that issue of ol skool rodz with jesse james 54 on it? There was an article in there on Frank's Fabulous Ford, which I believe was a 49 shoebox. I really liked the chop on it, but can't find the magazine around my house. If anyone has it I'm trying to figure out what size the front/rear chop was on his car, because I really digged the look of it. I think he's outta San Diego. Thanks
You might want to check out http://www.shoeboxford.com/. They have several threads on chopping. Also try http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/135_0302_chop/. It's a 3 part "how to" series.
Here's a pic of a '50 I did for a guy I used to work for (primer). Straight posts, rear window laid forward in one piece, used an extra roof to make it longer. I'll admit it doesn't look as cool as some of the hardtopped ones but it's a relatively simple chop. The other pic (flames) is a '53 that I chopped when I was 15 and I still have the car. Looks OK in the pictures but is going to take a serious re-work to make it correct. Starting with a stocker and building a chopped and hardtopped custom is pretty challenging to a first time builder, I admire your ambition. Buy yourself a copy of Tex Smith's How to Chop Tops, read it thoroughly and seek out your project car. Good luck to you.
I had a feeling hardtopping a shoebox would be plenty of work, but I can't stop drooling over the copper 50 hardtopped sedan on riksters page. I just like the sleekness of the hardtop. Now if I were to hardtop it I could just cruise it for a while without working windows right? I'm ***uming i'll have to take care of the structural issues first thing when removing those pillars for extra support though?
Could someone tell me if this is a coupe or a sedan that has been hardtopped ??? Thanks http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_...d_custom_cars/garcia_51_ford/paso_05_207.html
This one? this is a Sedan for sure And the best looking hart topped 49-51 Ford ever is ofcoars the George Cerny/Barris built Buster Litton '49 Ford based on a Business coupe body. Barris performed the chop.
