I saw this in the back of a Junkers truck. It's a 1949-55 GMC Pickup sheet metal... When I flagged the guy down and asked if I could take a look, I saw the whole front end and bed. It had surface rust but otherwise very sold tin. I asked what he was going to do with it, and the guy says "I'm gonna sell it to the steel yard, and get some beer money." I asked if I could buy it and the rest of the truck, he said "Hell no! I know you're type, gonna give me nuthin' for some scrap and sell it for money at da yard!" Then he got into his truck and drove off... I was gonna give him
More than scrap would.... Which would be $50 in scrap I would've doubled that to pay him. Some people are just ignorant. That is right now probably going into a shredder and he drove off with $20.

well... you have to figure if your job is driving around in an overloaded 1/2 ton pickup grabbing up steel that other people are throwing away you are not the smartest knife in the drawer.

I know the steel yard I go to would've sold you that tin for no more than double what they paid the tool. What a shame. Anytime scrap prices go too high, it makes it harder on the car hobby. Parts cars get expensive or they just go to scrap before anyone has a chance to save them.

A few years ago I came across a very small junk yard behind a guy's garage. He was in the process of sending all the cars ( maybe 50 in all ) to the crusher. At that time I think the price of steel would have yielded him about $125 per average car. He had 3 or 4 Granadas, 2 Mavericks and a Mustang or two, all with 8-inch rears. I asked if I could buy a rear end and he said yeah , $250. Around here 8-inch rears were ( and still are ) going for about $100. I told him I would buy them all at $100 each and if he would roll the cars over I'd take them out. He wouldn't do it and as far as I know sent them to the crusher. He could have gotten $100 from me and probably another $100 for the rest of the car. Go figure >

Thats not a 1/2 ton, it's a Nissan mini truck. :D Just felt like being a smart ass about it.

  12. At the local yard here you can buy for the price they would get by the pound, I've spent a few happy shopping days there.

I could not do any more as I had my 2 and 1 year olds with me. If he would have accepted my offer ($100) I would have had him follow me home to drop it off and followed him to where he got that poor victim.

Kind of funny the title to this thread; yet you ask that.

  18. To be a further smart ass - those trucks were rated as 1/2 ton :D

  19. What you saw in the scrappers truck is no different than people that let nice cars set out in the weather to rot away saying not for sale " I am going to fix it up real soon " I have watched a 32 two door sedan do this exact thing for 35 years only to have the gas company drive over it with a D 8 cat just last winter .

That 32 owner should be put in prison, like this guy today... It's not just an old car/truck, it's part of history... It's like towns letting a house owned by a significant person be turned into a gas station (my home town was the birthplace of a president and he lived there most of his early life... But they tore the house down to put in a gas station)

I was at a U-pull-it yard today just to see what was there, I didn't really need anything. Anyways, inside was a late 20's Chevy dump truck. Only sheet metal left was the cowl, and it was in pretty decent shape. When I asked the owner how much he wanted for it he said "i dunno, make me an offer" I said $30, considering that he was just going to send it to the crusher as "tin" anyways. He came back with a hell no and "Its probably worth double that in scrap! I get $150 for a cab, so I'd sell it to you for half the price of a cab" Lets just say I walked away.

You wouldn't believe some of the super solid classics people brought in there as scrap, it disgusts me

Hopefully you run into him again. When you do, tell him you would have given him $500...

What is Friday the day for blue font? Is Red tomorrow? No I thought most people knew that once something goes INTO the scrap yard, it can never be sold back out. As per my comment that following him to the scrap yard really wont do much of any good.
