When i assembled my 4 banger Ford engine today i forgot to put in the metal front oil slinger on the crankshaft. I used a 1-Piece Front Crank Oil Seal made of rubber instead of the original ropes. I am wondering if its worth to remove the oil pan and timing cover again to get it in there. Or is it just fine with some extra oil on the new modern style seal?
How much oil will actually be flying around in that area when its running? Im not familiar with those engines, but I'd sit down & take a good look at it & think about what goes on in that area regarding oil splash. I may be wrong but I dont think you'll be revving that little engine real high anyway?
That engine will never see high rpm, and i think there will not be a lot of oil in that area. The original 2 piece rope seal, is soaking oil and get lubrication that way so it does not run dry. Since the original rope style can keep oil inside i actually think the rubber one need more oil splashing at it for lubrication. The missing oil slinger is probably supposed to sling off the oil that follows the outside of the crankshaft?
Same thing happened to me when I built my flathead, it also has a 1-piece front seal. Haven't noticed any problems, and it Has seen some revving. I think you'll be fine with the way it is.
I've done that more than once. Turn around and there it sits on the bench. Last time I assembled an engine I was tempted to hang it from my neck so I wouldn't forget! Amazing how quickly you can tear the front of an engine back down and then together again when your pissed off at yourself!
Thanks "Skelli" thats just what i wanted to hear, glad i don't have to pull the oilpan and stuff again. I used some silicone on the gaskets so i think they would tear.
Ask on the monthly banger thread- you'll get an accurate answer from guys that drive these every day!
Take the time and do it now before you get it in the car and get all pissed. It won't be that much work now, just do it, and feel warm and fuzzy.--TV
