Another Jersey boy! Paisano! I grew up in northwest NJ just across the bridge from Easton, PA, but that was half a lifetime and two marriages ago. Been back a few times, its changed too much to call "home" anymore. I guess I'm doomed to be the eternal nomad... Thanks for the welcome!

 

Just a word of caution: These guys will bust chops if anyone uses the word "Rat Rod" and they can be tough on anything after 1964. They are not Muscle Car fans or fans of Pro Street.

 

Yah, I found that out about two weeks ago. I was talking about my new 53 Chevy, and how "now I get to build my rat rod"... Mushroom cloud! I think a lot of them are band-wagoning, being told that rat rod is a bad word, so they also start blasting people who use the term. Truthfully though, a "rat" was a big block Chevy engine, often swapped into a lighter weight frame and body setup in order to go faster without the "extra" ****. Hence the rat rod was born.

I have no idea who started the rumor that they are shoddily built, unsafe, or whatever, but if that's going to be the common belief around here, then so be it. I just won't use it. I've always felt that a rat rod was more about at***ude. Putting emphasis on the important things, like the engine, transmission, suspension, etc., and foregoing any luxuries, such as upholstery, paint, etc., that really do nothing for the performance of the car. I guess I've been wrong in my thinking as to what a rat rod is my whole life... unless THEY'RE all wrong and I'm right...

I got the whole pre-64 thing too. That's fine. If they don't want to hear about my '66 Galaxie 500 drag car build (with the 1964 Galaxie interior), then they don't have to. Gonna be something else though. Their loss. I'LL still get to drive it...

From the kids on their big-wheels who wave and give you a thumbs up as you p***, to the 80-year-old Great Grandma who shoots you that knowing look and a crooked smile as she sits at the light next to you and thinks back to her younger days.

We are the fuel that will ignite the fire in future generations, as well as the keepers of the icons that take the generations that came before us back in time. These cars belong to all who are inspired, touched, and appreciative of our craft. These are not OUR cars. We bear a much greater responsibility as their caretakers.
